Today, I was given a fantastic opportunity by @cr_uk to talk to patients and cancer survivors at Barts Hospital in light of International Clinical Trials Day. . It was incredibly inspirational to meet so many courageous people who kept a very positive attitude despite battling life on an everyday basis. . As a PhD student, I spend a lot of my time researching the unknown, questioning my data and trying to understand what (on earth) is actually going on. My cells choose to behave differently every time () and I’m honestly not even sure what to expect anymore. Nonetheless, having deep, meaningful conversations with the community was so refreshing. If you’re based in the lab, I strongly urge you to get involved in such events, as it’s vital to be able to see the broader picture of your research, and really appreciate the importance of your work too! (It’s also great motivation if you’re feeling done with experiments). . Not all heroes wear capes. You’ll be pleased to know the tears have all dried up and have been replaced with a big smile. Marathon No.10 completed in 3hrs 46.30. Still a little gutted I had to walk from mile 22-25 and miss another sub 3hr 30 run but know it was the right decision and I’m happy I at least managed to jog in the last 1.2 miles. The shin splints were fine I just didn’t have enough training miles in my legs to get round at the pace I wanted. Thank you to everyone who has sponsored. Anyone remember the research funding I applied for a few months ago (of course you don’t!), well news is out today that I got it . I am so pleased about this, as getting funding is so competitive (funding rates vary depending on what you apply for, but they’re around 10-15%), and I wrote this application while we were in the midst of all 3 kids having chicken pox, so I’m super proud that I managed to hold it all together and get it done. The funding has been given jointly from 2 organisations: Cancer Research UK (which I’m sure everyone has heard of) and the NC3Rs (which is dedicated to reducing the number of animals used in UK scientific research). I’m going to be working with a team at the University of Hull, adapting a technology called tissue-on-a-chip that they’ve developed. In this technology we’ll take pieces of liver tissue and grow breast cancer cells on them to see if we can better study how breast cancer cells grow in the liver without doing experiments in mice. The overall idea is that if we’ve got a better way of studying breast cancer cells growing in other organs (like the liver) then we can understand more about how it happens, and then hopefully work out how to stop it. It’s taken two years but I’m getting better day by day! No longer look like the poor sick girl! Have my color back, skin's better, steroid weight and swelling going down, even though it’s taken time, finally lost over a stone since my treatment ended, however, struggling right now to loose more, but now that I have my mind set on a healthy eating diet I’m hoping to shred off few pounds before the summer holidays! For those that are wondering why I’m struggling to loose weight is because of my medication I take every night (tamoxifen). I no longer have periods it’s temporarily but because of it I feel bloated. I will not let cancer over rule my life, I decided to loose this weight, no matter what, I will do my best to feel and look good. Right now I’m just reminiscing feeling half normal again. Music,nature, my daughter and husband is my special place right now. I’m experiencing new things. Spent so much time with my baby girl and husband where I was fully involved and not just partially involved because I was too sick to function and contribute. Did a road trip with the family.
