Falcon Heavy’s nebula: The center core is continuing downrange (bottom right) as the rocket’s two side boosters perform boostback burns to reorient themselves back toward Cape Canaveral. The interactions between all the exhaust gases here creates an incredible, colorful spectacle that is equally dim — this image was shot at ISO 25,600! I’ve got to mention my good friend and amazing photographer @erikkuna who has been doing these shots recently and inspired me to go for it on a whim — go check out his page for a much cleaner shot, similar to this. At 2:30am this morning, @SpaceX & @NASA launched a Falcon Heavy megarocket from @KennedySpaceCenter in Florida, carrying 24 satellites into orbit. This was the first ever night launch of this rocket - the most powerful in the world (and only its third launch overall), in which @SpaceX successfully landed two first-stage boosters back at Cape Canaveral - seen here initiating thrusters on re-entry and again upon landing. I’m still in awe from witnessing this remarkable mission - the sensation of seeing, hearing, and feeling a rocket launch of this magnitude is unreal. This image is a single long exposure. The test version of Orion attached to the Launch Abort System for the Ascent Abort-2 (AA-2) flight test passes by the iconic Vehicle Assembly Building at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida on May 22, 2019, during its 21.5 mile trek to Space Launch Complex 46 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in preparation for its launch this summer. In the background is the iconic Vehicle Assembly Building. During AA-2, a test version of Orion will launch on a booster to more than six miles in altitude, where Orion’s launch abort system will pull the capsule and its crew away to safety if an emergency occurs during ascent on the Space Launch System rocket. The AA-2 elements will be stacked together at the launch pad over the next several weeks. The launch is planned for July 2 and is a critical safety test that helps pave the way for Artemis missions near the Moon, and will enable astronauts to set foot on the lunar surface by 2024. (EDIT: SpaceX is NOW TARGETING 2:30am EDT on June 25th for liftoff.) Later today SpaceX’s Falcon Heavy will launch the STP-2 mission. This will be the first nighttime flight of the Falcon Heavy, and, it’s going to be incredible. I have some exciting plans. Remote cameras are set around the pad. Let’s hope they work. Stay tuned. This is Space Shuttle Atlantis on the Missle-Crawler-Transporter rolling to the legendary Launch Pad 39A, where the Saturn V launched to the moon. You can easily see how big the Shuttle is, if you compare it with the red car in the right bottom corner. Because of this size, NASA bought the Crawler-Transporter for $14 million. The transporter is the largest self-powered vehicle in the world and the vehicle itself weight over 2.700 tons! You see, huge and powerful rockets are not all the space industry has to offer!
