This time next week I suspect my wonderful gal @chelseacsheehan will already be sick of living out of a van with me as we roam the American Southwest! Exactly 24 weeks ago today, on December 17th, I had major shoulder surgery requiring the implanting of six pins in my shoulder to keep tendons and muscles in place. The doctors’ orders for recovery were 6 weeks no work, 8 weeks no driving, 10 weeks in a sling at a 45-degree angle, 12 weeks no running, 16 weeks no lifting anything heavier than one pound, and 22 weeks of physical therapy. Over the past 6 months, nothing surprised me more than the pain and duration of recovery and the limitations my body experienced in healing. But what also surprised me was the determination, resilience, and power my body had to heal. Like a pregnancy, my progress was measured in weeks. Two weeks after surgery, at my first physical therapy appointment, my range of motion was a mere 5 degrees. It wasn’t until 20 weeks later, nearly five months, that I finally achieved a full 180-degree range of motion. Other rotations of my arm, while limited, are steadily improving. I am now virtually pain-free, and Friday marked my final physical therapy session as I said a bittersweet goodbye to my amazing trio of magicians, Rachel, Zack, and Shayne. These physical therapists warmly encouraged me through my moments of frustration and helped me, well, soar. During my time not working, I indulged in reading, Netflix, and yes, Instagram, where my adventures through all of you were a welcome escape and distraction from discomfort. Were it not for the patience of my amazing family, incredible co-workers, and my PT crew, the mending process would have been even more challenging. So in the spirit of graduations, gratitude, and moving forward, I thank so many who helped me along the way. And a special thanks to my IG friends, most of whom never even knew they were there for me!
