This why the movement against climate change is much smaller than it can and should be. Currently, a large part of it relies on creating awareness and applying pressure on the people who cannot do much about it. This isn’t to say that I think individuals cannot take small steps to contribute towards alleviating it, but the fact remains that if corporations keep operating the way they do in the name of development, we aren’t making real progress towards reversing or even stalling climate change. Why is the discourse so flawed in the people it targets? Is it because we are too comfortable with the current definition of economic growth and development? Is it because it’s easier to challenge individuals rather than the government and corporations? Climate change is NOT a social issue. It has implications for more than just human society. Therefore, applying the same methods of protest that we use to combat racism and homophobia isn’t going to work. There is work that needs to be done to create awareness, but I believe that energies created as a result need to be channelized differently. We need to work towards building pressure groups that can influence local governments to change the way they operate and legislate. We need to work towards creating consumer behaviours that reward environmentally-conscious corporations. We need to work towards applying pressure on corporations to reduce their carbon footprint and operate in a more eco-friendly manner. We need to change our definition of development and growth—because no matter what billionaires and the government tell us, at this point of time, I believe that they cannot go hand in hand. Especially when we are considering the short time frame we are working with. No government or corporation is going to give a damn if ten people protest outside their offices. But the effects of climate change will be felt by us all. Unless the entire country or the entire world is screaming at them, they will continue to turn a blind eye as they have been doing all these years. (continued in comments)
