Meet Comet, this beautiful boy was born on Friday and is 1 of twins! Twins are not very common from cows and can lead to complications during the cows gestation period, birth and the initial bonding period. Comet was found in the middle of the field in the rain, very cold and unable to stand. His mum was across the field with his twin, who was much bigger than him, standing and following mum. Our hearts sink when we have to bring a calf in, they find it difficult to feed, and often have health complications that are not initially obvious. This can often be a reason the cow has rejected a calf, they often know before we do and it makes them vulnerable within a herd. Comet was brought in by the team, dried off and warmed under a lamp. He didn't take to the bottle initially but is now calling very loudly when he is hungry! He is being groomed frequently with a warm sponge to replicate a cow licking her calf. He loves this, and its so important. Cows love being groomed, it helps them to bond with their herd and in the early stages it stimulates the muscles and get everything warm and working. For now Comet will be cared for by the farm team, they will start integrating him with the herd soon as its important he learns to be a cow! He will continue to be fed in the field until he learns to steal milk, calves are very good at this and unlike sheep, cows are much more tolerant of sharing their milk with others. Lets hope he finds the Guernsey, she has enough milk to feed the whole herd! #churchfarmardeley #hertfordshiremums #farmvisit #stayonafarm #hertfordshire #hertfordshirelife #hertfordshirebusiness #cows #cow #calf #calves #freerangefarming #carefarming #camping #camp
Our planting is complete and it is part of the #carefarming concept that we initiated at the farm this spring. My fellow farmers from @visionsofindependence_mb have been planting seeds, transplanting seedlings, learning about compost & soil health plus we find time to visit with the horses and other animals. We are all excited to see how our living teepee turns out this summer! #lovemyjob #experiencethecountrylife #farmaway #comestaywithus #gatherlearnstay #lifeskills #teamwork #growingourownfood #sootheyoursoul #timeinnature #airbnb #freshisbest
We're Growing Care Farming using £1.4m of funding from the Department of Education to create a huge increase in the numbers of people who can benefit from structured activities on care farms learning new skills, animal husbandry, gardening and cultivation techniques and managing woodlands.
You're going to hear a lot more about Care Farming in the future as this boost in funding will see a huge increase in people benefiting from this wonderful approach.
Natural England are leading the project which will be delivered by Social Care Farming and Thrive. It's an important way to deliver the ambitions of the 25 Year Environment Plan and part of a much bigger £10m project to connect more Children with Nature (including the Nature Friendly Schools project running with the Wildlife Trusts).
Rural Care have been selling their wears at a craft fair today. We are invited to have a stall twice a year by health and community services in Stevenage. Its a wonderful opportunity for us and we are so grateful to be able to show off what we do. The Co Farmers manned the stall and got to sell lots of the craft they make and the plants they grow. It also hopefully raises lots of awareness amongst the health and community team and other professionals about the kind of opportunities we offer. We have had a great day and can't wait for the next one! #churchfarmardeley #hertfordshiremums #hertfordshire #hertfordshirelife #specialneeds #specialneedsfamily #specialneedsparent #carefarm #carefarming #specialneedskids #specialneedsmoms #hertfordshirebusiness #socialenterprise #socialenterprises
