People often ask me if how I apply gold on ceramic. This is gold luster being brushed on a mug and it needs to be fired for the gold to show. Once fired properly, the gold is food safe according to the manufacturer. I also tried gold leaf application. It works, however the gold is much more fragile than the luster and can be scratched away quite easily when washing the wares. Why are ceramics with gold more costly? Gold costs $$$. I probably use 500$ worth of gold for each restock. Also, the gold needs a third or fourth firing, and adds labour, so these steps add to the cost of the final piece. The gold I use is either 22k or 23k. If applied too thick it will run a little, too thin and it will be purple-ish... Happy Mugshot Monday! ⠀⠀ So a little update. I'm getting pinholes on the outside of my pieces with this glaze combo. So I have a few things I'm going to try but I might sell them as seconds. ⠀⠀ First, I'm going to refire a few in a reduction kiln. This could change the color of the glaze however. We shall see! Second, I'll do some manipulating of the main glaze. This might not work though because this clay has a lot of iron in it and I can't do anything about that. Third, I'm going to try a different glaze application approach. I will have to wait for the first glaze application to dry in order to complete it. ⠀⠀ I really am more on the other side of the fence of just not using this glaze combo anymore and switching to a different glaze that doesn't give me problems. This clay, like I said, has a lot of iron which does prove difficult on finding a glaze that plays well. But I might have found one and I love it! I'll show you in another post. ⠀⠀ So the next update will include this glaze combo. Some will be discounted if there are a lot of pinholes (on the outside only). Some pieces that will be in the shop update would be ice cream cups, two big bowls, coffee pourovers, mugs, and coffee carafes with coffee pour overs. The date for the update I'm still figuring out... I'm aiming for Wednesday...
