I created this class for one of the women in my class who has a hard time moving around on the ground and getting up and down. It’s a great sequence as it can be led pretty seamlessly with the chair and without. As students rested on their backs and later came into supta padangusthasana, my dear student sat in the chair with her feet relaxed on the bolster and then stretched her legs out before coming into the above sequence. I wanted to remember this class as it was very special to the both of us.

I have been teaching a chair yoga practice for the past month here in LA. I’ve enjoyed sharing a variety of ways the chair prop can be used to support one’s practice and also demystifying the idea that such a prop would make poses only easier.
There is another take on “chair yoga” geared towards generally senior aged practitioners, where they may sit on the chair during the whole class and practice a variety of modified asanas. And it’s all good stuff from what I can tell. In my class I have elderly (and injured) bodies but I like to keep them moving on and off the chair. I like to see them find their edge with and without the chair prop. There is much more they can do than they imagine is possible.
Ever tried a modified forearm plank position on the chair seat pushing off the tops of the feet?! Explore how a simple and slow movement lifting the knees, hovering them off the floor, and descending with control can fire up all kinds of core muscles involved to stabilize the body in position. These slow and controlled movements also get into stability of shoulders and strengthening of triceps, not to mention awareness of hip flexors and extensors along with all sorts of activity of feet and ankles! Some parts of this video demo are sped up to fit time. Practice slowly and steadily to build strength.

Use two blankets or simply socks for the hands and feet. (Note: blankets have added weight and greater surface area, thus producing more drag resistance. It's harder to use blankets than socks!)
Sequence:
1. Elbow and knee extension
2. Floating Plank (See previous post)
3. Floating Salabhasana - shoulders flexed, then ADDucting in a position of ABduction, to flexion
4. Elbow extension with hip ABduction glides
5. Above + shoulder extension for upper thoracic extension
6. Synchronized shoulder + hip ABduction glides
7. Opposite shoulder + hip ABduction glides
8. Assymmetrical shoulder + hip ABduction glides
9. "Cobra" with straight arms
