Uno de estos últimos estudios, realizado por el BMC Complementary and Alternative Medicine, concluye que los ejercicios de pranayama pueden reducir la inflamación crónica . Cuando tenemos una infección o un virus, nuestro sistema inmune libera proteínas llamadas citoquinas, que actúan como una especie de alarma, y avisan a las células que es hora de combatir a un invasor . La inflamación prolongada deriva en niveles crónicamente elevados de citoquinas, que a su vez deriva en daños en el tejido . Al realizar éste estudio, se vio que la respiración yóguica redujo la presencia de citoquinas en saliva. Una teoría es que la respiración yóguica produce proteínas de alto peso molecular, como la mucina, que funciona como una esponja absorbiendo el exceso de citoquinas para que no produzcan daños, pudiendo seguir liberando citoquinas cuando se necesario para combatir infecciones .
