Capsaicin is a natural product found in chili peppers that is responsible for the spiciness of spicy foods. On the Scoville scale used to rate the pungency of chili peppers, pure capsaicin has a rating over 15,000,000. Aside from its culinary importance capsaicin is also used for topical analgesics, treatment of peripheral neuropathy, pest deterrents, and personal defense pepper spray. Capsaicin binds to receptor called TRPV1 which normally responds to heat and abrasive damage, thus providing the same sensations without any physical burn. Pure capsaicin is not red, but is a crystalline white powder that is extremely irritating and toxic to all mammals. Most people are familiar with mild overdose symptoms such as tearing, sweating, vomiting, intense pain, and burning diarrhea. Iron pentacarbonyl is a yellow-red liquid that can be produced by combination of iron particles and carbon monoxide at high temperature and pressure. This volatile and flammable metal complex is the industrial precursor to carbonyl iron, a grade of metallic iron so pure that it can be used in delicate electronics and supplements for human consumption. Iron pentacarbonyl is widely applicable in inorganic synthesis, as the carbonyl moieties easily undergo substitution by ligands like isocyanates, phosphines, and alkenes. The gaseous carbon monoxide released from the compound, which prevents oxygen transport through the body, is responsible in part for the great toxicity of iron pentacarbonyl (LD50 = 25 mg/kg). A lethal exposure to iron pentacarbonyl initially causes mucous membrane irritation, headache, and shortness of breath. Dimethylmercury is an extremely potent neurotoxin and likely the most toxic compound of mercury. It is a volatile, flamnable, and colorless liquid with a sweet odor, although being close enough to smell this probably means you are doomed. Symptoms of poisoning are highly delayed and no effective treatments exist once symptoms appear. In 1996, Karen Wetterhahn, a chemistry professor at Dartmouth College who was an expert on toxic heavy metals, worked with dimethylmercury following all known safety precautions including a well-ventilated fume hood. When she spilled one or two drops on her gloved hand, she was unfazed and simply cleaned up then exchanged gloves. Nobody at the time knew that the compound easily permeated gloves and then the skin. Months later, Wetterhahn experienced abdominal pain and loss of coordination. Testing showed mercury levels 50x above normal. Despite all treatments, Wetterhahn lapsed into a non-responsive state and died ten months later at age 48. Unlike most organometallic compounds which tend to hydrolyze and violently catch fire, organomercury compounds are fairly stable, increasing their tendency to bioaccumulate. Uses of dimethylmercury included as a methylating reagent for synthesis, an NMR reference standard, and a toxicology reference. Hexachlorocyclopentadiene (HCCPD) is a yellow liquid with an unpleasant musty odor. Due to its high reactivity and membrane solubility it is a severe irritant to the skin, eyes, and lungs. By means of the Diels-Alder reaction, HCCPD is the precursor to a suite of chlorinated pesticides known as "cyclodienes" that were widely used between 1948 and 1988 (eg. aldrin, endrin, chordane, heptachlor). However, these compounds were discovered to be persistent organic pollutants (POP).
