When Connor was an infant he was identified through genetic testing to have a microduplication of chromosome 21q22.3. It was an unheard of duplication, and neither Pittsburgh Children's or the Cleveland Clinic could give us any answers to what his delays, his health or his potential would be. No one in their databases had ever been identified with the same chromosomal anomaly.They simply told us this duplication was pathogenic and we were referred to every specialist under the sun. A complete duplication of Chromosome 21 is Down Syndrome, and no one knew knew what the future would hold for my sweet baby boy. For years, we had appointment after appointment. He went through various surgical procedures. He was enrolled in speech, physical, and occupational therapies. The unknown is a terrifying place to sit. What I held onto was that I knew I would love him unconditionally, no matter what his ability level, or general outcome may be. This entire chapter of life, albeit formidable, I am grateful for. It made me realize strengths I never knew I had, and gain empathy and humility that I never knew I needed. Flash forward to yesterday afternoon. We sat down with Connor's teacher, speech therapist, and our district's director of Special Education. Connor does not qualify for any further services. He scored above average and average on every assessment given. Connor is a bright, and beautiful young boy, who is in one of the top groups in his class. He will not be needing an IEP entering kindergarten and is completely developmentally on track (physically and cognitively). I cried tears of joy last night and again this morning. A wave of relief has washed over me. Connor's dreams of being a doctor, a scientist, a race car driver, an astronaut, whatever he wants to be are completely attainable. I can let go of that fear, of that worry, of that unknown.
