It’s only from above that you can truly appreciate the colossal scale and beautiful form of Florence’s Duomo, and the nearby Campanile di Giotto bell-tower provides the perfect vantage point. . To build this towering construction, Brunelleschi needed to lift 37,000 tons of material, including over 4 million bricks, many hundreds of feet into the air. To do so, he developed a number of innovative hoisting machines, which fascinated and inspired a young Leonardo da Vinci, who worked as an apprentice in the workshop which produced the huge metal orb which crowns the lantern. Brunelleschi’s machines were used to hoist the orb in place in 1469, and da Vinci made a number of detailed sketches of them, leading many people in later centuries to falsely credit him with their invention. . The lantern itself is practically the size of a small chapel, and the fact that the dome can support it in addition to its own weight seems almost miraculous.
