William John Martin was born on July 20th, 1824 in Lawrence County, Alabama to parents whose names I could not find. I could find, however, that his father was born in South Carolina and his mother was born in Tennessee. The 1880 census states that he was a farmer and he had likely farmed all of his life. In 1844, he married Harriet White and they would have twelve children. Five of these children would not survive to adulthood. Sadly, this was not uncommon in the 19th century. He enlisted on October 3rd, 1861 in Company H “The Sons of ‘76” of the 26th Alabama Volunteers at Tuscumbia, Alabama. His military records could not be found and likely do not exist. Unofficial sources state that he was captured at either Franklin or Nashville, but escaped the hands of his enemy. William survived the war and returned home to Alabama following its end. His son, George Franklin, appears to have possibly served in the 30th Alabama, but George Martin is a very common name and it could be someone else. William lived with his family in Alabama until his death on December 20th, 1895. In this image he holds a bowie knife and a revolver.
