How many likes can we get for Tony? He took us around the world and, in a sense, through time, usually just across the table or bar. One year ago today, chef/writer/travel guide Anthony Bourdain left us very suddenly. His life’s mission was to connect people through food, culture, and history. His shows and writings very much reflected how connect to the past and connect to each other, usually over a well-cooked, inventive meal or a cold pint or something consumable that you just didn’t at all realize was consumable.

What did T. rex actually eat? The first place to look for clues is in its stomach…but lacking that, paleontologists can also analyze the contents from a later stage in the digestive process: its waste! Fossilized remains, known as coprolites, can reveal not only what an animal has eaten but how it consumed its prey. Analyzing T. rex feces, researchers found that it contained high levels of phosphorous and that 30 to 50 percent of the specimen was composed of bone fragments—some as small as grains of sand—from a young animal. The contents helped scientists confirm what this predator’s impressive anatomy had long indicated: T. rex could crush and digest large amounts of solid bone. McCarty was named after a contractor who lived here during the construction of the Santa Fe Railroad in the 1880s. It is just west of Acoma Pueblo and Acoma Sky City. McCarty is also known as Santa Maria, a name used by Jack Rittenhouse in his 1946 guidebook to the area. Rittenhouse described Santa Maria as a small cluster of adobe homes and a mission church clinging to the rocky side of the mesa. No tourist facilities except for a gas station at the highway. That is still true, though there are plenty of amenities a couple of miles away in Acoma. The old mission church still stands. It is an excellent example of Spanish Colonial architecture.

What has a bulbous bill, dark plumage, and thick, lobed feet? Meet the Hawaiian Coot (Fulica alai), also known as the ‘alae ke‘oke‘o! It’s a waterbird endemic to the Hawaiian islands, where it might be spotted hanging out around freshwater ponds, reservoirs, or brackish water. Unlike other waterfowl, its feet are lobed. These are useful not just for propelling through water or walking through muddy wetlands, like webbed feet, but also for skimming on the surface before taking flight and even for clawing at rivals.
