Chillon Castle (French: Château de Chillon) is an island castle located on Lake Geneva (Lac Léman), south of Veytaux in the canton of Vaud. It is situated at the eastern end of the lake, on the narrow shore between Montreux and Villeneuve, which gives access to the Alpine valley of the Rhône. Chillon is amongst the most visited castles in Switzerland and Europe. Successively occupied by the house of Savoy then by the Bernese from 1536 until 1798, it now belongs to the State of Vaud and is classified as a Swiss Cultural Property of National Significance. The fort of Chillon, its modern counterpart, is hidden in the steep side of the mountain. Chillon began as a Roman outpost, guarding the strategic road through the Alpine passes. The later history of Chillon was influenced by three major periods: the Savoy Period, the Bernese Period, and the Vaudois Period. The castle of Chillon is built on the island of Chillon, an oval limestone rock advancing in Lake Geneva between Montreux and Villeneuve with a steep side on one side and on the other side the lake and its steep bottom. . . . --- : @christofs70 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- #historicalplace #historicalbuilding #historygeek #historybuff #historicalmonuments #historynerd #historicarchitecture #quoteslover #total_monuments #monuments #landmarks #loves_monuments #tv_monuments #best_worldplaces #travelhistory #traveltips #travelguide #travelphotography #travelawesome #travelholic #unesco #schloss #castle #exploreswitzerland #castles_oftheworld #chateau #switzerland_vacation #map_of_europe #living_destinations #kings_alltags

Kızkalesi (Maiden's Castle, also known as Deniz kalesi) is a castle situated on a small island in Mersin Province of Turkey. According to Strabo, the island was used by the pirates in the ancient age. But the castle was probably built by Alexios I Komnenos of the Byzantine Empire after the First Crusade. It was extensively rebuilt in the 13th century by Leo I and at least one subsequent monarch of the Armenian Kingdom of Cilicia. Archaeological surveys published in 1982 and 1987 found that the original Byzantine plan survives primarily at the south with the characteristic square towers. The Armenians rebuilt the north and west sides of the castle with their distinctive rusticated ashlar masonry and round towers. They also put new facing stone on most of the Greek construction. Two Armenian inscriptions reportedly mention the rebuilding of this site by King Leo I (1206) and King Het‛um I (1251). The Armenians also built a barrel vaulted chapel inside the fort. The island was once connected to the mainland fort, Corycus castle, by a breakwater. The Armenians called this fortress Gorygos. In the 14th century the Cilician Kingdom was on the verge of collapse and in 1360 Peter I of Cyprus captured the island at the request of the inhabitants. The castle was captured by İbrahim II of Karaman in 1448 and by Gedik Ahmet Pasha of the Ottoman Empire in 1471. The name Goygos was changed to Kızkalesi. . . . --- : @kus.bakisi

How Old are the Egyptian Pyramids? . Situated on the south-western edge of Cairo, the Egyptian Pyramids are a marvel to behold. They are widely accepted as having been built by the pharaohs of the Old Kingdom over a period of 85 years, between 2589 and 2504 BC. However, evidence indicates that the Egyptian pyramids could be between 200 and 1,200 years older, while other evidence suggests they may actually be more ancient. . Before the development of modern techniques, Egyptologists originally referred to the King List written by Manetho, who lived sometime in the 3rd century BC. The list details the dates of rulership of Egypt’s first six dynasties, and claims they ruled for a total period of 1,478 years. .However, the King List was passed down and altered over many generations by Christian, Jewish and other scholars, and so its reliability has been questioned. Different versions of the list exist with different dates for the same pharaohs. Then in 1820, Italian explorer Bernadino Drovetti discovered pieces of a papyrus called the Turin King List, or Turin Canon. This list is about a thousand years older than Manetho’s and claims the first six dynasties ruled for only 955 years. Although the Turin King List was found in tiny pieces, with more than two thirds of the whole document missing, it is used as the basis for our understanding of ancient Egyptian chronology up until the New Kingdom pharaoh Rameses II. Some scholars believe the author of the Turin King List was recording an estimated timeline rather, than it being based on fact (for example, there are three reigns in a row each lasting 24 years.) . How old do you think the pyramids are? . ⁣ Follow @thehumanoriginproject⁣ @100.pixels

A bird's eye view of the magnificent Angkor complex. The site was built to represent the ‘home of the gods’, Mount Meru, a mythical sacred mountain in Hindu mythology that is considered to be the residence of the god Brahma and the Devas. ⁣ ⁣ According to some researchers, (as seen with the Giza Pyramids in Egypt), Angkor also has correlations to certain star constellations. Does the original layout of Angkor Wat stem back thousands of years ago and could it be much more older than what we are lead to believe with mainstream archaeology? ⁣ ⁣ Several years ago scientists using lidar technology unveiled more secrets and mysteries of Angkor Wat. Their scans revealed undiscovered archaeological sites, including a city in the jungle that may be larger than Cambodia’s current capital city Phnom Penh. The future looks bright and who knows what exciting new discoveries lay ahead with this mysterious ancient site.⁣ ⁣ Follow @thehumanoriginproject⁣ @ancientdestinations⁣ @esrigram
