Anyone who’s driven down Westbrook’s Brown Street has no doubt spotted these identical Queen Anne cottages lining the road, all painted in a different color. More noticeable is that they all have one of my favorite architectural quirks: a jerkinhead roof! These homes were built in the early 1880s to house workers of the nearby Cumberland Mills. The cottage design has been attributed to noted architect John Calvin Stevens, who would go on to design several more houses for the mill’s employees later that decade. Despite some of these cottages losing shingles on the second story and corner porches on the first, they still remain in great shape and are still cute as hell

I stopped by one of my favorite homes today, the Captain James Patterson House in Dresden ❤️ I’ve posted it before but haven’t shared too much of its history here. Patterson had this house built in 1765, never knowing that he would have less than 3 years to make it his home before his untimely death. He had already made a name for himself as a master mariner and had just recently married Margaret Howard, the daughter of a prominent judge and one of the first European women to live at the Cushnoc settlement (located in present day Augusta). James and Margaret celebrated the birth of their second son just as construction began on this home. But Patterson’s life came to an abrupt end when his ship wrecked off the coast near Friendship in December of 1768, claiming the lives of all on board. So devastating was the accident that the island the ship collided with became known as Wreck Island - and it’s no surprise that ghostly apparitions and strange lights were soon being seen there by passing sailors. As for this house, I have no clue if it’s haunted by Patterson or not, but I’m glad it’s still here today, so many years after he and Margaret built it for their new family.
