Here are the two very different spaces in which I exist and work. Day 6 of #marchmeetthemaker is full-time or part-time, so here’s the scoop. I am a full time high school Spanish teacher and a maker/artist on evenings and weekends. Both make up a huge part of my identity and sometimes it can feel like they’re almost at odds with one another. I’m combining days 3 & 4 of #marchmeetthemaker together: a flatlay & my tools. These are the big players in the process of linocutting for me. Though, I keep looking at this pic and realizing I’ve forgotten several important materials & tools (like lino, duh!). There are my carving tools- a combination of Power Grip, Speedball, and Pfiel gouges, a soft rubber brayer that I swear by over hard brayers, a wooden spoon and bamboo barren used to rub the ink from the linoleum to the paper/fabric, and a few other things. Playing the keep up game with Day 5 of #marchmeetthemaker...A throwback to the details of a print I love- the climbing shoe. I’ve been trying to get out to do some bouldering the past week with the intent to get in shape for sport climbing this summer but daaaaamn do I need new shoes. Day 2: How did I start Funky Love? For years I’ve wanted to funnel my creative energy into something more tangible and focused. But it’s scary to make something and put it out there for the world to judge, especially since I didn’t go to school for or receive any training in the arts, so I always seemed to talk myself out of it. But last summer, a lot of factors came together at the right time to give me the push I needed. Probably the biggest was @colton.sullivan being my cheerleader, encouraging me to actually follow through and believing in me. Compound that with the fact that I was pretty much sidelined the whole summer by a pinched nerve and couldn’t do much of anything except lay down but I found that being hunched over a table working with my hands actually alleviated the pain too. So I thought, “What the hell, let’s make 2018 the year I do this.” And I’m so glad I did because Funky Love has taught me so much about myself and brought me so many smiles. ————————————————————————Pic 1: My first linocut, full of mistakes and showing an unsteady hand and poorly sharpened tools, but hey, I did it!
