Julia Florida - Agustin Barrios Mangore This music was written in December 1938 while Barrios was living in Costa Rica and was dedicated to Francisco Salazar’s niece, Julia Martinez whom Barrios taught. It is wonderful romantic music full of peaceful longing with airs of the music of Chopin, a composer whom Barrios was heavily influenced by. Even if I try it is impossible for me to imagine more colourful music than that of Barrios, pierced by the adventure of his life and also the tragedy. Okay so I know I said I wasn’t going to work today...but I just couldn’t help it! I’ve been so inspired learning the 6th Suite . . “Playing” is very much what this is, by the way, not practicing. I’m all about focused, intentional practice, but I also think we all need time devoted to just playing our instrument and enjoying ourselves. (That’s how I justify going to work today )

Variations on a Catalan Folk Song opus 25 - John Duarte Who likes Sight-reading? ‍♀️ This beautiful music takes its place in my feed as part of my own ‘Song Society’ - a concept Jamie Cullum started where you take music you don’t know and then record it within the hour. For some people maybe this is a nightmare, me, I love sight reading I love being surprised by what’s on the page! My top tips for sight reading would probably be - 1. Be a motor, never stop 2. Time is a loose concept, people can complain about your rubato but if you are sight reading and your main aim is to ‘get through it’ stretch time as and when you need ⏰ 3. Reduce as much as you need to, choose one important element and stick to it, maybe follow just the melody, just the harmony or just the rhythm, everything else can wait ‍♀️ 4. Look after your face never let on, even if you are literally crashing ————————————————— ⭐️ I have to admit that I never knew a lot about John Duarte. When I was young I had a book of short pieces and one of his more simplistic tunes was included in amongst a few renaissance/baroque pieces so I thought that Duarte was from the 1600s ‍♀️ I actually only discovered that he was a contemporary composer when Alfonso Montes (who I met at the Tübingen guitar festival LAST NOVEMBER!) told me that he had been part taught by Duarte while he studied in London.... Who am I? (Part 2) I spend a lot of my life looking at music from an analytical way ☀️ I love to think, to digest and observe my own thoughts and come up with little theories. I love to explore texts written about psychology and the arts, and to discover that many things I think are sensible. I love to explore music and imagine the thought processes that the composer/imaginary muse were experiencing. I love to read as many words as possible, cramming factual texts into my head, crunching statistics, internally debating, just as much as I love to read fictional imaginations of worlds and people and emotions.
