Where do movements begin? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The internet is an incredible tool for change. However niche your interests are, you can find a like-minded community online. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ But along the way, we’ve become blinded by its power and turned it into a numbers game. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ How many times have you looked at a competitor and felt disappointed, maybe even a little jealous, that they’ve got more followers than you? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ When we think of movements, we think of marches in the street with thousands of activists carrying placards. Or we think of petitions that get over 6 million signatures. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ But every movement has to start somewhere… ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ For @where_does_it_come and me, it began with an idea for a more ethical awards programme for changemakers, which doesn't cost anything to enter and doesn't rely on hiring an expensive PR agency to put together a winning entry. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The Be The Change Awards was born, and when we went live at the end of 2018, over 160 changemakers from around the world came forward to tell their stories. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Since announcing the finalists last month, we’ve already reached over 12,200 people and made it into the press worldwide, from the UK to Jakarta to Australia! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ And we’ve ‘only’ got 250 Facebook fans. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ So the next time you look at the numbers and feel your heart sink a little, try to think instead about the people behind the pixels. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Every single follower has chosen to be part of your movement. Which means they believe in you and your mission. It’s not an exaggeration for me to say that @gretathunberg has inspired me more than any other human to work on saving our planet and raising awareness of the climate crisis. ... This quote of hers says everything. Our house is on fire and we have to act. I’ve been very moved by @extinctionrebellion in London this last week and their work as a movement that shows how we can be powerful and make our voices heard. ... For me it’s @fash_rev week every week, but I want to point out the huge impacts of the fashion industry when it comes to the environment. ... Fast fashion is enormously wasteful. It uses precious resources from the Earth that we take for granted, water, land, oil, people and animals as though they are completely disposable. Then it encourages you to buy more than you can ever wear and throw excessive amounts into landfill when you get bored. ... We are privileged to not live with the consequences of what fashion is doing to the planet. Who cares about the poisoned rivers in Bangladesh, China and Indonesia? The drought caused by cotton farming at sites such as the Aral Sea? The illnesses caused by pesticides in communities that can’t afford adequate health care? The devastation of oil mining for our polyester? The clothing sent to East Africa that we don’t have space for in our Western landfills? ... It’s essential for fashion to move to a circular economy where resources are valued and re-used. We need to use non-toxic chemicals, materials and processes that will stop poisoning the Earth, people and our wildlife. ... It’s not all doom and gloom, there are many ways that we can be mindful when it comes to fashion but the facts need to be heard and taken seriously. ... We can all start by asking #whomademyclothes and demanding transparency from the brands we love. @gretathunberg recently addressed the UK parliament, saying ‘I know many of you don’t want to listen to us – you say we are just children. But we’re only repeating the message of the united climate science.’⁣ ⁣ She pointed out the UK shale gas fracking industry, the expansion of North Sea oil and gas fields, the building of more airports and planning permission of a brand new coal mine as ‘absurd’, as well as the UKs ‘creative’ carbon accounting. ⁣ ⁣ We are not doing enough, we talk about climate change seriously, but this is not reflected in our actions.⁣ ⁣ The greenhouse gas emissions curve is still increasing. Greta says that every time we make a decision, we should think about how it will affect the curve. Indeed, she says we should ask ourselves ‘have we got the carbon budget to spare to go through with this?’⁣ ⁣ We know climate change is a real and dangerous problem. This is a fact. We’ve known it for years. We know that we must reduce our dependency on fossil fuels and make the economy more circular. ⁣ ⁣ We haven’t quite figured out all the solutions yet, and this is where political inertia stems from. As Greta says ‘we have to start treating the crisis like a crisis – and act even if we don’t have all of the solutions’.⁣ ⁣ Stopping climate change will require a lot of thinking and change to our economies and governments. We don’t know the answer yet, but we will find a way. Anything we all put our mind to, we can achieve.⁣ ⁣ Climate change is real, and an emergency, let’s treat it like one.⁣
