So, check it: it's kind of a big day because I was just informed that one of my research publications has been cited 101 times in other medical literature, with over 350 indexed citations for all of my publications combined (thank you, Google Scholar, for the stat sheet). That's CRAZY! And wildly humbling. You see, that's not a number indicating how many physicians and scientists have read my collaborative work, but how many actually used it IN THE COURSE OF THEIR OWN RESEARCH! I have been, and will always be, floored by the reciprocity in science -- uninhibited by language, race, creed, or continent ✌ . . If you wear a dexcom, you’re welcome ‍♀️ If you’ve used a sensor or insulin pump there’s a huge chance I’ve been a part of the clinical trials that allowed the FDA to approve it. Today I had an blood drawn every 5-10 minutes for 10 hours to check accuracy, and I’ll wear these 4 extra sensors for 15 days. I’m excited to see what comes out to the market next.

When you grow up in a Nigerian family typically there are typically only 3 acceptable career options for you. Doctor, Lawyer, engineer. In my family if you had an aptitude for science that meant you're the future doctor. So I accepted this and told everyone I wanted to be a doctor when I grew up ‍⚕️. BUT...then I quickly realized could not stand the sight of blood. And at 8 years old I had to break the disappointing news that medicine was NOT in my future. I went through my education chasing my interest in chemistry ‍. All of that order and trends depicted on a 18 column 9 row table really had me. I focused inorganic chemistry. D-orbitals, pi-backbonding, point groups, all of that. But I wanted context for all of that theory. How do we apply those molecules to every day life? This question that led me to radiopharmaceutical chemistry ☢️. One of our ultimate goals is to make new molecules that can interact with a biological target in a disease while carrying a radioactive element. This radiation can be used to treat the disease by emitting a cyctoxic amount of radiation or it can be used as a signal to detect and diagnose the disease. However many of these agents we develop as "basic researchers" will diagnose and treat mouse cancer but never see the inside of a human. I had to know why, so I enrolled in a clinical research associate program and found out the ins and outs of a clinical trial. Bringing a new agent from preclinal to clincial studies is not just about whether or not the new agent works, but also whether or not it can be made in a safe, clean, ethical, and cost effective way. There can be a disconnect between clinical researchers and preclincial researchers. The clinicians are not always up to date on the emerging technologies and the basic researchers are not always aware of the clinical needs. I think one way we can help ease the process of clinical translation is to look on both sides of the aisle and see what is need and what is available. So here I am still #notthattypeofdoctor but doing clincial research, working with physicians, and staying far away from any all human blood Are you in basic research? Is translation doable?
