While we’re at it -early portrait miniatures that is- I want to share this with you. An circular miniature measuring ca 10 cm, painted in watercolour/bodycolour on vellum/parchment. The modelling of the sitters features show excellent drawing and painting, the artist isn’t just anyone. It’s probably French and it has historically been attributed to Clouet. So far we have not been able to identifiy nor the sitter, neither the mark on the hat, but I am sure it can be solved with some help. Please feel free to comment should you have any interesting information. The miniature has suffered from damage in the past, leading to the vellum being stuck to a piece of slate as a means of restoration. The vellum is thicker than the vellum used for miniatures later on, and shows small almost circular holes similar to worm holes in wood. As a result the paint layer has undergone harsh handling, mainly in the blue areas, with retouching and overpainting of delicate areas. This kind of pressing a sensitive paintlayer to a hard backing and retouching too much, affects the objects authenticity as the original gets less original so to speak. That is why documentation of damage and treatments is so very important.
