It's been crazy windy here so no wanderings for me today. But I have a backlog of photos because I have it on good and modern advice (ie from someone under middle age) that if you post too often you get unfollowed. And my fragile ego cannot handle a mass exodus so I've been keeping it pretty much to once daily. You're welcome. But thought I'd try to get a Friday night post out into the world before I head out with the husband. We used to go out for Friday Night Fun every single Friday but we have tended choose wine at home in our pjs more recently. I was starting to realise that Matt usually only sees me in my pyjamas or in my hiking gear so thought it might be nice to change things up and to wear my hiking jeans out to dinner instead of in the bush What a lucky guy! We get Eastern Yellow Robins here and they love the shadowy confines of the bush across the road but that makes for bad photos. This one popped up in front of me on a walk about a week ago. I am trying to get back into health walking so had my headphones in so I wouldn't hear the critters and get too distracted but still had my camera around my neck. Ah, about that. I'm a 'just in case' kind of girl. But look, it weighs a bit so that's got to help with the weight loss yeah? Anyway, imagine how sad I would have been with this little beauty posing in front of me (albeit on a wire fence) if I didn't have my camera with me? And who wants to read a whinging post on Friday? Fridays are for winingnot whining, after all. I regularly see these guys either on the ground grabbing at insects or hanging on the side of tree trunks fossicking around for bugs and spiders to eat and for some reason I mostly hear them calling just as it becomes dark and now when I hear them, I know that dark is closing in. They're almost like my anti alarm clock. Here's to a great weekend for everyone! Another freezing cold, dreary, manically windy morning. Husband is still snoozing away, and I've just watched dog number 2 get up and trot her way back to the bedroom, choosing body warmth and blankets over the heater that I'm crouched in front of. So unlikely there'll be any real adventures again today, apart from doing the groceries which last time I checked wasn't the most inspiring thing to do. Although I have to admit that I actually don't mind it all. All those options. All those bargains. A trolley to lean on as you swoosh (slowly) up and down the aisles. Anyway. So I trawled through my photo library and remembered this incredible urchin I found a couple of weeks ago (and then again a few days after that). These Slate Pencil Urchins are common and so distinctive that now I've seen one I'll be able to identify the next from 100 paces. I actually found this one in the shallow pool that I've filmed it in. Right out in the open. I didn't even have to hunt, or turn over any rocks or risk squatting down and getting stuck there, flailing around waiting for help. Nope. Love a critter that makes life easy. Urchins like to hide away in crevices during the day and come out at night, roaming around, using their incredible teeth to munch away - with this species eating algae, so I was super suprised to find it and once I grabbed a couple of photos and some video I found a more sheltered rock pool for it so it could hide safely away until nightfall. This video is sped up, as the process of it turning itself over, rotating its spines and pushing off against the sides and floor of the rock pool took about 3 minutes. Which if you think about it, isn't a long time for what is essentially an armoured simple animal consisting predominantly of a mouth and gonads and no true brain, to not only work out that it is upside down but to then to right itself. #djiosmoaction #rockpools #rockpooling #seaurchin #slatepencilurchin #marinebiology #sandonpoint #bulli #coalcoast #northernillawarra #backyardzoology

I love when the animals come to you because let's face it, ultimately Sundays are for being a lazy cow! We always seem to have Eastern Whipbirds around, either in the bush across the road, or more often bouncing around the backyard or in the shrubs up the side, constantly reminding me of what a true blue Aussie cobber I am. It's currently breeding season (July -December) and boy, do my ears know it. These guys have the loudest call, especially when you are peering into the dark foliage trying to work out where they are and then they pop up right next to your ear drum and call for their mate. These guys were in our backyard first thing this morning, so I ran out this morning, still in my pyjamas, camera around my neck trying to pinpoint their exact location. I saw a flash of olive a couple of times but they were soon gone. The silence mocking me One coffee later and they had moved out the front, still calling and returning the call so I thought I'd try my luck and what do you know, I had a super compliant bird who decided that the best way to call was right out in the open. Thank you wise bird and I got a few dozen shots, headed back in, put the camera on the dining table, turned to the husband and said, "My work here is done." These two Carpet Sea Stars were holding onto each other for AGES, neither of them seeming like they were wanting to take the next step. I've seen this happen a bit. It almost seems like there's a bit of a stand off - I can't really think of any other reason that they would be actively holding onto each other, sometimes staying in an almost upright position, balancing on just a couple of their arms. Finally, one animal tends to be more of the aggressor and might try to actively pin down or grab the arms of the other star and it is on! I was filming these stars from above the water and ended up plunging the camera beneath the surface to get another angle and you can really see the many tube feet reaching out and around - these are used by the Sea Star to grab at prey and to enable them to move around. I wonder if when used in this way, that they're hoping to get a grasp on their rival? Either way, I really should start taking bets on which one will come out the victor and make some sweet, sweet cash from the comfort of the rock pool.
