Know when to get screened Updated guidelines and screening
In May 2018, the ACS changed its guidelines for colorectal cancer screening based on research showing an increase among younger adults, despite an overall decline nationally.
ACS now recommends screening begin at age 45 for people at average risk, meaning those who have no personal or family history of colorectal cancer or certain polyps; no personal history of inflammatory bowel disease; no confirmed or suspected hereditary syndromes that increase risk for colorectal cancer; and no personal history of radiation treatment to the abdomen or pelvis for prior cancer.
The ACS recommends individuals “in good health” and with a life expectancy of more than 10 years receive continued screening through age 75.
For adults ages 76 to 85, screening should be assessed on an individual basis.
For those older than 85, screening is not recommended.
Screening involves one or more tests or procedures:
3 main types of visual exam: colonoscopy, typically performed every 10 years
CT colonography, or virtual colonoscopy, which is performed every five years
flexible sigmoidoscopy, which is performed every five years
in addition, three stool based tests may be used (foodandnutrition.org)

Well, here I am again--In a hospital bed. I know this isn't a flattering photo, but honestly it's not here to get likes or gain "instafame." I share my hospital journeys and ER visits not for attention, but to remind you all that IBD and IBS are two different things. I share it to remind you that Chron's Disease and Ulcerative Colitis are real things and they alter your life.
Your diet changes, your comfort in social scenarios changes, you get embarrassed by the most unflattering of emergencies, you get frustrated, you have to become comfortable with telling doctors EVERYTHING and used to being poked, prodded, scanned and scoped in every which way. Your immune system becomes compromised as it is an Auto Immune Disorder. Your hospital bills skyrocket, your pharmacist becomes your best friend. Your family becomes frustrated because they can't help you and your friends go through a whirlwind of emotions ranging from worry, to fear, to disbelief to annoyance.
There is nothing convenient about IBD and as always, remember-- it's not just a stomach ache so don't tell me to suck it up and take some Tums.

That feeling when you’re trying to be a champ and hustle through chemotherapy #36, but @unitedhealthcare denies your oncologist’s order to have comprehensive tumor profiling done by Caris Molecular Intelligence. Good thing my amazing oncologist at @gwuniversity is ready for their peer to peer review & I have access to amazing resources on my own thanks to @FightCRC & @colontown. United is lying to try to save themselves a few pennies in my quest to save my life. #liars
Scientist & Colorectal Cancer Survivor @mary.fullofgrace has launched a survey to assess the needs of colorectal cancer patients. Please follow the link in the graphic. It is also in my bio.
As colorectal cancer diagnosis rates continue to rise in young folks like myself, it is important to participate in these surveys so that our stories are shared through data! #colorectalcancer #patientscientist #patientpower
So after 5 years of having considerably bad bowel problems, yet hearing "you have crohns you dont have crohns you have IBS you might have colitis you might have crohns" and multiple inconclusive tests. After a biopsy, i have now been diagnosed with crohns disease. Bit shit, more pissed off the fact i have waited this long just to hear what i have pretty much always assumed. But hey ho no point dwelling on it the past month or so my diet has pretty much been on point and ive not had any issues and ive probably felt the best i have in a long time physically. This has also helped me mentally, knowing that stress and depression are heavily contributing factors to crohns disease, im almost proud that ive managed to not get too overwhelmed and bring on any episodes. Atleast now i can finally ease my mind knowing what is wrong with me and can learn to live with this and be happy and healthy.
And no i dont poo in a bag.... #chrohnsdisease #Colorectalresearch #chrohnsandcolitis #guyswithdiseases
