How was I diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease? A recent question I was asked from a friend. . Every person is different and every process can vary. But for me, my main symptoms that made my mom take me to the doctor, were horrible stomach cramps and pain, and blood in my stool. . I was diagnosed at 12 years old. At the time, I was in middle school and I was also a competitive soccer and softball player. I had always been athletic but when I was diagnosed, my mom noticed that something was off. . So we made an appointment with a GI in Sacramento and that was the start to my visits to medical team after medical team until we could find the right one to care for me like I needed to be cared for. . Some advice I would give for those new patients who are just being diagnosed, do your research for the medical team that is best for you. Be ready with questions and right away be in charge of your care. I was too young at the time but I wish I would have spoken up and told my mom I needed a new doctor. . Then maybe it wouldn’t have taken 7 years to get my ostomy and my colon might have been saved. . You write your own story. I believe things will happen like they are supposed to, but you do have a chance to decide your fate. Don’t ever give up on yourself. . I have a Barbie Butt and I’m proud! . What is a Barbie Butt? And why would someone have to get one? Let me explain. . When I got my loop ileostomy back in 2013, I was struggling with severe perianal disease. Crohn’s Disease may be an invisible illness but it affects your colon so much that sometimes it leaves you in the bathroom several times a day. So I’m result this can leave to affecting your bottom and creating fistulas. . So a Barbie Butt is when your bottom is sewn up so you no longer have an open Butt. Weird ha? . The reason I received mine was to cover up my fistula and my rectum was also removed. I had to have 2 surgeries because the initial one didn’t work and my bottom had to be redeem up with a flap surgery. . This was by far my hardest surgery and my worst and most painful one. I would never like to sugarcoat the pain a Barbie Butt can be after surgery, but I’m here to tell you that appearance should be the least of your worries. . There are other reasons you may have to get a BB for example having fistulas, UC/Crohn’s complications, and others. After getting my Barbie Butt, I didn’t want ANYONE to know or see. . How do you explain something like that? I’m here to tell you no one cares!!! No one cares about something like this. My bf at the time didn’t comment about it once and loved my body and me for the person I was. In all honesty if someone does, and it matters to them that much...they aren’t the one for you. . You really have to give people a chance because they will surprise you. I know they’ve surprised me. .
