Did you have a chance to read my article on how you know it’s time for pelvic rehabilitation? . . Here is another excerpt. “Knowing the difference between under-active and overactive muscles dramatically changes the treatment. This is why seeking a proper diagnosis is crucial. Overactive muscles are spastic, tight and contracted. The muscles are in spasm and often make sitting painful. This can also make intercourse uncomfortable or downright painful and can affect the bowels and bladder. For these patients, Kegel exercises would make the muscles tighter and aggravate their pain, so prior to strengthening it’s important to relax these muscles. These patients will present with pain during intercourse. . . It might feel like they are dry (though might not be) or feel a twisting, stretching sensation during intercourse. They may also have pain with tampon insertion, to the point that they cannot insert it or it feels uncomfortable when they have it in. Patients with overactive tight muscles tend to have to urinate frequently and have the urge to go regularly. Having this urge any sooner than every 2-3 hours is too frequent. They may also have to urinate in the middle of the night. Women with overactive tight muscles may also be chronically constipated. . . People are often confused with the definition of constipation. Constipation is a condition in which there is difficulty in emptying the bowels, usually associated with hardened feces. Most people assume if they defecate once a day they are not constipated but that is not the case. If there is any straining or pushing to defecate this is also considered constipation. Treating overactive muscles are more difficult than underactive active muscles because there are two steps in treatment. The first is to make the muscles relaxed, and then to strengthen the muscles. We tried giving small amounts of water, decreasing solids, and increasing breastfeeding and none of it really worked. Stomach acid is important!  It serves a purpose and a very important one at that.  It helps you breakdown your food, it helps you absorb nutrients, and it helps keep bad bacteria/pathogens from making their way into your digestive system. .. Pharmacies and drug stores are full of medications (Tums, Nexium) that help to suppress your bodies ability to make lots of acid.  The problem is that these medications were NEVER meant to be used long term.  Why?  Because we desperately need stomach acid so we shouldn't be trying to chronically decrease its production! .. I see this all the time in my practice.  Not only are lots of people reaching for antacids for heartburn, acid reflux, or GERD and taking them long term but I even see doctors prescribing antacids medications and telling people they can take them forever.  That is very risky advise! .. If you don't have enough stomach acid then you have a harder time digesting.  You may become deficient in certain vitamins including B12 and iron.  You can’t break down proteins as well. And you are at a higher risk of developing a gut infection which can create a lot of other symptoms like bloating, gas, constipation, autoimmune conditions, anxiety, skin issues, hormone imbalances and so much more. ..
