Pistaschio ice cream. I took this shot just to show you how you can achieve a fairly nice lighting with only one light source. But is this really ice cream? Wouldn’t it melt? Yes. It’s actually not the real thing. I used a mix of confectioner’s sugar, canned icing and some food coloring. Much better than that potato mash some use which can give a bit too transparent look. A food stylist would have done a better job in preparing and styling (that’s why they rock) and most likely have preferred real ice cream. Swipe ⬅️ for retouch, lighting setup and a short video.

I was in China last month visiting my son, he’s at school in Beijing for the academic year. An interesting trip for sure… There is some English on signage in Beijing, but not much, you really need to be able to read and speak Mandarin to navigate the city and culture. Once we were through security at the airport, I no longer had my son as an interpreter. The vending machine at the gate to our flight had this; I can’t read it, but I know what it is, something familiar and foreign, definitely spoke to me as a photo worthy object. Simple as it is, it took me a while to interpret that those guys at Coke are branding geniuses — it’s a red and white color story. - #Techtalk: I sampled the red and then printed it out as 2’ x 3’ background so the edges of the can “saw” that color. I ended up using the 47mm lens on a view camera, low, aimed up and tilted the standards to make the can's edges square and parallel to the frame's edges, but the wide angle distortion gives the can more presence. Lighting a round and reflective thing presents challenges... since I was going for the color and not the reflective quality of the aluminum I used my secret weapon, a Broncolor optical spot, as my main light with a tiny bit of soft light fill from the top to slightly highlight to top plane.
