When your spine arches backwards into a #bridge your lumbar #spine and thoracic spine react differently. Check out the spinal position of this #contortionist. If you look closely you will see her thoracic spine is much straighter than the significant motion in her lumbar spine. But WHY? . Swipe to check out what the #vertebrae look like from a side view! . In general, thoracic vertebra have less motion than the lumbar spine. Look at all those "facet" joints. Each of those is an attachment point for another vertebra or for one of your ribs. Those connections through the rib cage limit thoracic motion. BUT that is not the only difference between the thoracic and lumbar vertebrae. .  Where the arrows are pointing are the joints that connect the vertebrae to each other. In the thoracic spine these joints point forward and back, but in the lumbar spine these joints point to the sides. This difference in orientation means that the lumbar spine has a lot more #mobility into flexion and extension and that your thoracic spine is better at rotation. . . Want to learn more?
