This week marks one year with my hijab ♥️ I chose to wear it by my own will. I feared God and it really took a lot of strength and imaan to make this decision. . . I was scared of getting bullied or harassed. I was scared of losing friends. I converted long before I decided to veil and knew this would be the biggest shock to those who knew me (I kept my conversion very private up to this point). However, Alhamdulillah... this was one of the biggest decisions I have ever made in my life. I saw so many blessings come out of this choice. Since graduating university and meeting some of the most beautiful people and fell in love with my religion even more. And Alhamdulillah, “friends” who clearly were not meant to be in my life vanished, welcoming in many more friends who are the sweetest, brightest lights in the world. . . One year has gone by. So much has happened. Good and bad. Great moments and downfalls. Trials and still holding on to the rope of God. . . I have learned that wearing the hijab is not only a scarf over my head, but it defines Modesty. And modesty is inclusive of proper dress code, piety, verbal communication with others and entails a beautiful character.. Character which exhibits kindness, care, love, and respect for everyone. . . Here's to my first year of modesty and many more to come in sha'Allah ♥️ May Allah continue to uplift my imaan and make me a stronger Muslimah. May God help us all. Two weeks ago I did something I hadn’t done before... I told my full testimony... publicly. I get asked about my testimony ALL the time. Especially when people hear I’m a convert - they instantly want to know the quick couple minute version. Like what was the ONE big moment that everything ‘clicked’? Everyone always wants to know it. Well, I never had that. I never had this one awe-inspiring moment. It was way messier, way more complicated than that. When I first talked with @pdclores about doing this - about sharing my whole testimony publicly - my initial reaction was ‘SURE!’. Then, as I started to write it out, it started to really sink in, what I was doing... we are talking about a whole lifetime I had to recount. It was the hardest thing I’ve ever had to articulate. EVER. It took me months to write. MONTHS. What do I include? What do I leave out? I had to go to some dark places, recount some of my lowest lows. That isn’t the easiest thing to do at times. However, the kinda amazing part about doing that? I spent months sorting through all the incredible ways God led me to where I am today. How he led me to His Church. How he has used my brokenness in beautiful ways - even if it didn’t seem so pretty at the time. One thing that is so important to remember when we hear people’s testimonies or incredible ‘turnaround’ stories... hindsight is 20/20. It’s easy to hear these stories and find them incredible because you know how it ends. It’s easy to see because someone has laid the puzzle pieces out in a way that makes sense after the fact. When you’re in the middle of those low places? You may not be able to ‘see’ the end, in fact, they may not even feel like ‘lows’ at all. I certainly didn’t see the ‘hope’ in Christ at many points in my life. No amount of ‘bible-shouting’ would’ve gotten me to see it either. We all have our battles to face. We all have our dark moments. Whether or not we realize it, He’s there. He always has been and always will be. Maybe you don’t see that right now and that’s okay. He’s still there.
