pics or it didn’t happen ———————— This draw hunt went from 0 to 45 real quick. When we arrived at our hunt unit, there was a good bit of ducks roosted in our hole. Most of them flew out before shooting light and we never saw a duck after 7:00. We began to walk around our unit to find a better place to set up, when we stumbled upon hundreds of coots piled up in the corners. With nothing else flying, we decided to jump shoot them while one person stayed in the hole by the decoys. We’d jump them, kill up to 11, and the survivors would go straight to the decoys. We did this a hand full of times all morning. We killed a 2 man limit pretty quick (30). We kept going just to fill a 3 man limit because we assumed nobody had ever done this at this place. Sure enough, we arrived back at the office to sign out and the managers couldn’t stop laughing. They said we were the first ones to ever kill 45 coots. “Just wait til everyone sees 45/3 on the board!” Call it what you want, I call it setting records!

Going against all my better judgements I’m going to post this coot since @mandernach95 @_minus_beard and @damonn_moore wanted to see coots based on their comments from my last post! A friend of mine that is about 20 years older than me was telling me about a time years ago when he was on a day long hunting trip. He always likes to hunt ducks in the morning and then spend the afternoon and evening hunting pheasants and sharptail grouse in central SD. After a day of doing that he had walked back over some hills around the time of sunset to watch a prairie pothole that had been loaded with ducks that day and see what came back in. It was quite cold that evening and as he was sitting in the grass and it got almost dark out he said that the coots started getting up and flying in a big circle up and up and up. The highest ones were barely visible as the last of them (thousands of them) were getting airborne. Then they all took off and and headed south...presumably never to be seen again in these parts. The only recorded coot migration that I have ever heard of.
