This 1940s jumpsuit or set of ‘Hostess Pyjamas’ radiates California sunshine. Designer Addie Masters pioneered a casual comfortable style that could take women from the beach and the pool straight to cocktails on the veranda. Draping her fabrics and cutting them like she would a gown, allowed the casual beach pyjama to morph into a more formal garment. However, using rayon rather than expensive silks also meant that garments like this were accessible to all sorts of hostesses, not just those with grand fifth avenue apartments. Designs like this show so distinctly how clothing is intrinsically shaped by and reflective of the context in which it is designed. It is the sartorial manifestation of a laid back Californian day at the beach.

Kimono dressing gown, silk, ca. 1885. From FIDM Museum, Accession Number: 80.40.1. “Beginning in the late 19th century, Asian decorative arts, and those of Japan in particular, had a tremendous impact on Western culture. Many Americans and Europeans traveled to Japan, often returning with textiles and garments that were soon converted to familiar Western garments. This blue dressing gown began as a Japanese furisode, or "swinging sleeves" kimono, a type worn only by young unmarried women. It is a particularly creative example of how Japanese dress could be transformed into fashionable Western dress. Through the addition of princess seams, lace undersleeves and inserts of pale-blue taffeta at front and back, the furisode kimono became a stylish Western dressing gown, complete with bustle. Regardless of these Western elements, the dressing gown is strongly evocative of Japan, particularly in its retention of the crimson lining often found in women's kimonos.”- Description from FIDM Museum Blog.

This dramatic 1998 Galliano for Dior creation combines elements of a robe à la française with the crinolined silhouettes that defined female fashion in the mid 19th century. The stomacher, open overskirt, and petticoat are emblematic of the eighteenth century, while the huge wired cages that support the skirts take their cue from the crinolines of the mid 19th.

Neither quiet nor calm
Searching for love again
Between the stones, between the storms
Between belief, between the seas

This 1660-69 bodice is trimmed with parchment lace. It is typical of 1600’s fashion, off the shoulder neckline with cartridge pleat sleeves. A petticoat of matching satin with a padded roll underneath would have been worn in combination with the bodice. @vamuseum #fashionexhibition #fashionhistory #fashionstudies #fashionmuseum #dressmuseum #dresshistory #costumemuseum #costumehistory #historyoffashion #historyofdress #historyofcostume #18thcentury #18thcenturyfashion #fashioncuration #fashionconservation
