22 years ago today I stood in front of 80 Centre St. in NYC. I was 26 years old. I took a deep breath, mustered up all the courage I had and walked through the doors into The New York State Court Officers Academy and my life was forever changed. The academy molded me into an officer but it was not until I walked in to my first command at Brooklyn Criminal Court did I have any idea what that entailed. As hard and as crazy as working at 120 was, those were some of the best days of my life. I met some special people while working there and I’m proud to call them friends to this very day. I spent 3 of the best years of my life there and It was with sadness that I left to take a promotion. I spent the next 3 years in Manhattan Supreme Court working between 111 & 100 Centre Street. I remember my first day. I had my hair tied up in 2 little buns on either side of my head. I walked in and the Captain (Greg Wayne, who sadly has since passed) said to me “What the fuck is on your head, kid”? “Are those garlic knots”? I instantly loved him! Later that week, there was a melee in the courtroom at the sentencing of serial killer. I found myself on the bottom of a pile of people, after getting up and dusting myself off Captain Wayne slapped me on the back and said “Welcome to Supreme Court, Kid”. Good times, indeed. While there have been many great days, there have also been many tough days. Physically and emotionally. As a 9/11/01 First Responder, I remember thinking "I did not sign up for this". But I did. I signed up to be the person running to the danger, not away from it. In 2003, I moved upstate and while I love where I live and I am happy where I work, nothing can compare to the time I spent working downstate. It shaped the officer I am and the Sergeant I’ve since become. Working for the state has afforded me to the opportunity to move to this beautiful town, own a home, wake up to birds singing every morning and spend my weekends hiking in the Adirondacks. I am thankful to have 22 happy, healthy years on this job. 8 more to go! Happy Anniversary class of 5/5/97 ! While conducting the New York State Courts Physical Ability Test a man collapsed suffering a heart attack. Lt. Erica Prosper @prosper928 sprang into action and performed CPR while the crew called an ambulance and retrieved the AED. He was shocked once. Lt. Prosper continued CPR and was able to resuscitate him. He was conscious and alert when EMT’s arrived. We’ll never forget that day. The entire team literally watched a man get a second chance at life. I love my job and I love my crew.
