To my somewhat dismay, my past week or so, plus many things I enjoy that have started to click in my head... Has been filled with coyote shifts. Past feelings and urges, as well are very much making sense now with a coyote, as they don't make sense with any other of my types. I'm currently in the California desert at a house that's about four hours away from civilization and oh goodness this might be an awakening. All the way here, driving past the rolling fields of grains and orchards and hills just..... I just want to run as fast as I can. I really don't want another type. I would assume it was cameo, I did for a bit but I realized that I had been getting the shifts and feelings for quite some time now. Much more research, thought, and meditation will go into this before I make any official statement.... Ah goodness.. I don't want another type. Even having three makes me feel.. invalid, a fake... This post isn't really Faerie-related, but over the past few months, I've had a couple people ask my opinion on therian gear/tails, and have also had a conversation on the topic with a dear friend of mine. This post will be opinionated. You may either agree or disagree and that is fine, but I am not interested in arguing. First off, I'm going to start by saying that I understand why people feel driven to get tails to wear. I used to wear one, too, when I was a kid long before I knew of otherkin, even before I was old enough to be online. It brought me great comfort, because even back then, before I had any words for what I was, I knew I was somehow not human. It comforted me to cuddle with at night and to wear. Now, as a nearly-30-Y.O. adult who has been through some drastic changes, I actually find it a little bit disturbing, especially from therians. And even moreso from fox/coyote/wolf therians wearing the tails of their kintype. You're a fox/coyote/wolf therian who misses being wild and free, who maybe has memories of a family, or maybe even of being hunted. And you are wearing the skin of one of your beloved kin...who more than likely lived their life in a cage barely big enough for them to turn around in, where they suffered psychological disorders and chewed the metal bars, perhaps had to have their teeth removed to prevent them from chewing off their own limbs, where they were abused, and where they were ultimately born, raised, and killed so you could wear their fur - often skinned alive in many countries. But perhaps that wasn't the life your fox lived. Maybe you thought to source an "ethical" tail. But laws are sneaky, and some countries are able to label their fur as ethical without it meaning much different. And again, ultimately, a beautiful animal was bred into existence purely for the purpose of being killed well before their time. Perhaps your tail came from a different source. Roadkill, they told you. But how often do you think someone might chance upon a fresh roadkill that didn't damage their coat/tail?
