Obviously the discovery of a dissected corpse in the remnants of a great flood is going to be newsworthy, and the public really ate up all of the gory details. The Times-Picayune noted that the long slit through James' body must have been made by an expert in such work, not so subtly implying that Mr. Dreher, the doctor, or Mr. Beadle, the skilled hunter & trapper, perfectly fit that bill. Then, after quite wrongly attributing the body's discovery to being able to float despite the 300 lbs of iron attached to it, they changed their story to include a clever biblical analogy: "And the floods passed away from this Ararat, that carried such a mountainous crime, and some crab fisherman came along." Such a lovely start to their novel.

One of the most famous (and little-used) firearms associated with the 1930s outlaw is the "Barrow Gang" sawed-off Browning Automatic Rifle. Often erroneously referred to as the "scattergun", (reportedly Clyde's nickname for the BAR in general - having nothing to do with barrel length). Clyde Barrow modified two in such a fashion, cutting off barrel and stock to reduce the overall length. One was recovered in April of 1933 at Joplin, Missouri and the other at Dexfield Park in Iowa the following summer. They truly seemed to have convinced themselves that not only did I enjoy all of the attention, but that they were somehow doing me a favor by making me into a celebrity. Or perhaps they just saw this as the pinnacle of their careers and weren't concerned with who died as a result. Facts be damned, they needed a good story, and a good story needs a good ending. And that is how I came to be remembered as the first woman to hang in the state of Louisiana. In reality, I was the first white woman to be hanged, but again, facts be damned, history wants a good story. In an instance where someone appeared to realize the gruesomeness of a trial serving as entertainment for the bored masses, the day after my death, Arthur Brisbane of the San Francisco Examiner asked, "Does a great State deserve to have on its records the first hanging of a white woman, or a black woman, either?" Well, Arthur, that seems to depend on who you ask. ⚰️

On Friday 20 March of 1925, five Illinois men attempted to rob the bank at Steelville, Missouri shortly after holding up a nearby restaurant. Unfortunately for the robbers, a local posse had been hastily assembled and was waiting in ambush. Two bandits were killed outright, one was shot through both legs and abandoned by his accomplices, one was captured uninjured and the fifth escaped. I don't know what arms were used by the men involved, but the Winchester Model 1907 .351 Self-Loader with a ten-shot magazine would be hard to beat. This one was manufactured c.1920.
