Today I finally saw the light at the end of the tunnel and boy oh boy is it bright and gleaming! 12 years upto high school + 4 years of undergrad + 4 years of medical school = FINALLY DOCTOR KHERA!!! ‍⚕️ It was pretty difficult not to get choked up today as I bid farewell to my alma mater, classmates, and friends. But most of all, so thankful to my higher power, Waheguru, Amrik, Burrfi (my pup-peroni) and my wonderful family and friends who stood by me every step of the way. I remember when I graduated with my bachelors degree, I was definitely not nearly as excited because I was still not done. Whereas most of my peers were excited to step out into the real world, I had 4 tumultuous years of medical school ahead of me. But today I am incredibly happy and grateful because I will finally get to treat patients beyond just my mere suggestions of over the counter meds lol. ( Ibuprofen Gang ). It truly is a feeling unlike any other, and my wish is if you are pre-med, MS1, MS2, etc....keep on swimming! Study not merely to get by, rather always remember someone’s life depends on your studying and perseverance. And also, you didn’t come THIS far only to come THIS far.

An incision is made with hope for a cure, but the cancer has spread and you close without closure. The baby is born but no breath is taken. 911 has been called. ER starts the code. Surgery is notified. An incision is made. The bleeding won't stop. The injury is too severe. Compressions are done but no pulse returns. Breaths are given but the sats keep falling. Beep beep beep ................ No time to rest. No time to stop. The next add on is here. The surgeon awaits. No time to grieve. No place to hide. Your call shift just started. Rarely do you hear praise, or a pat on the back. The patients don't remember your name or that you prayed with them at the start. You are the unsung hero. The person without a voice. You are beaten, broken, tired, and ready to go again. You have no quit. You just keep going. Day after day. Call hour after call hour you keep doing what it is that you do. Calm fears. Hold hands. Save lives. They may not remember who you were or what you did for them, but you do. You know that they are able to see their kids, grand kids, husbands, wives, parents, and friends again because you were there for them at all hours of the day or night. To all O.R. Professionals everywhere. Thank you for what you do. Thank you for who you are. I know what you give. I know the impact on your health and on your families. I know that you wouldn't change it for the world. I will tell you… I will make your child breathe… I will make your father survive a stroke or a heart attack… I will make holding your hand seem like the most important thing in the world when you are desperate and scared… I will make myself being up all night just to make sure you are alive monitoring your vital signs… I will make my family wait for dinner until I know your family member is taken care of. I will make myself get up at 5am to check if your wife has the meds she needs to live… I will make a fundraise for your pricy surgery when the insurance company is refusing to pay… I will make myself skip breakfast, lunch or dinner so that I can make sure that everything I did for your mother today is charted. I will make myself to leave my kids for weekends and holidays because your kids are not getting sick Monday through Friday… I will make you go home and sleep reassuring that I will take care of your child while you are resting… Do you still want to know how much I will make?
