Question (I have been asked a lot): in your books and online posts you often use the term "mummy" for bodies which appear mostly just skeletal, so where does one draw the line between skeleton and mummy? There is in fact a clearly defined distinction between the two. Mummification means that some amount of skin and/or various other soft or connective tissues have been preserved. Many of these in this gallery look mostly skeletal, but in fact some amount of skin, muscle, etc. have been preserved. Often it's greatly deteriorated, but it's still present, making them all qualify as at least partially mummified. Remarkable photo by @hexenkult of a mummified baby from the late 18th century. This baby was a member of the Orlovits family, and died along with the mother from tuberculosis. They and other members of the family were buried between 1731 and 1838 in the crypt of a Dominican church in the northern Hungarian town of Vác. In 1994, their naturally mummified corpses were discovered during renovation of the church. Their bodies as well as their rosaries, stockings, and clothing were perfectly intact. After examining the remains, scientists determined that 89% of the mummies had been infected with tuberculosis at one point in their lives, and around 35% were suffering from the disease at the time of death. One researcher wrote of the importance of this site: "strains of tuberculosis bacteria found in the people buried in Vác offer a unique opportunity to study the pathogens from a time before the development of antibiotics and prior to the Industrial Revolution.” And there are important implications for the future: an Australian surgeon named Dr. Mark Spigelman has been studying the bacteria found in one mummy in particular, and the information gleaned from the DNA could provide information that will help fight tuberculosis in the 21st century.
