Who else still row crop cultivates some of their crops? ———————————————-The only fields I cultivate are the fields I have to flood irrigate. I lay out pipe and run water down the rows in furrows I make with a hiller. Sometimes it’s not needed but other times it’s beneficial to physically take out a few weeds that didn’t quite get killed by the herbicide with a cultivator. More times than not it will save a second spraying application. The reason for this when the plants start to create some shade and the top of the bare ridge gets a hard crust on it, the weeds won’t grow around the plant and the barring off discs are able to straddle the row and get it pretty clean. Every year is different though and it doesn’t always work like that. Plus these fields only account for 140 acres. The rest of our operation is no till.
