We’ve just made it to Uyuni after spending a night on the Salt Flats. The Salt flats were pretty breathtaking and we can see why it is the top tourist attraction. Every year in January the lakes above flood and cause water to flood the salt flats. We didn’t fancy walking our bikes through the salt water so instead we had a great time people watching all the tour groups on their day trips in 4x4s. Not quite as remote as we hoped but we had a great campsite just at the edge with a lovely Canadian named Ben.

We were so lost in the desert that the first time we saw a "South Africa" road sign was 4km before hitting the border ! Here it is, the southernmost African country of our journey! And our first arrival line !! And here's a new chapter in our adventure! We were looking for a place to sleep and after riding a few km on a nice trail, we met a local who invited us to camp in his garden! ️⁣ So far so good... Until a massive storm and a lot of rain changed the entire plan for the next cycling day. ⛈️⁣ The trail had changed to a mass of sticky mud. We couldn't even ride the bike... We met this great cyclist from the Netherlands, called Isha, cycling on this day from Isfahan in the direction of Tehran. We came from the opposite direction and could not cycle together with him. Fortunately we all did enough kilometers already and looked for a camp spot together . This way we could exchange valuable information about our routes since we both came from the direction the other one was just going to. Also we had a romantic dinner together and enjoyed also breakfast the next morning. Isha travelled the last 9 months thru Russia, China, India, Pakistan (to name a few) and is now on his way back to Europe. His route is remarkable and untypical! There are some standard routes people take to cycle Europe and Asia and mostly you have to take one or two plains. Isha only cycled and took the train. We haven't met anybody till now who took this kind of route without flying. We were very impressed! Keep it going man! Pay also attention to what his shirt says! ☝️... On his back you can read the same message. Isha said the shirt helps a little. And we are very jealous and would love to have a shirt like this too! Because almost every second truck horns at us. We know they horn at us because they like to express how much they appreciate that we travel their country (and not because we're in their way...). But still, it makes us crazy ...
