I am now the proud owner of an original Pugin tile! Thank you for the opportunity to own a little bit of decorative history @awnpugin As you can see if you scroll across the tile was manufactured near my home at the Minton factory in Stoke-on-Trent. Originally the tile came from St Mary's convent, Handsworth, having been rescued by the sisters following restoration work. The tile is unglazed and has a lovely soft patina. It may have been in a part of the convent destroyed in WW2. I was going to use it as a coaster but it is much thicker than a wall tile and seems to be happy amongst my houseplants. #Pugin #victoriamagazine #victoriana #decorativedesign #tiles #mintontiles

What a brilliant thing it is to have 2,000 souls take the time to at least glance at the work I'm producing. I am so grateful. Does anyone hate the term “followers” as much as I do? Who the fuck wants to follow? Who the fuck needs to lead? If anything, we are fellow travellers, refugees from the mundane, traversing the Hidden Lands, those vast latitudes between flesh and dreams. We are artists, poets, thinkers, tricksters, scoundrels. We are psychic dancers, we are lovers of life, and we travel. We travel by hot air balloon and by palanquin. We travel by caravan. At night we build bonfires on the dunes, sharing stories and a pipe. We travel by levitation and astral projection. We travel via the Orient Express of the imagination. The train is a thousand miles long, each of the cars extravagantly furnished. Look! to the right of us are the pyramids, to the left is a haunted forest. High on a hill is the glowing palace of the Sorceress, where the tigers softly prowl. Above us, saucy Saturn is flaunting her rings. I raise a toast to her. Four earthenware sandwich tiles. Designed by A.W.N. Pugin, and manufactured by Minton & Co. 1866. Deep plastic clay body, red between buff, with inlaid decoration in red, white, brown and blue, all covered with a clear glaze. 15 x 15 cm. The design features a repeat pattern of white fleurs-de-lys and rosettes within lozenges; the centre of the rosettes has a very fine inlay motif of a square and cross within a circle. Maker's mark on reverse: MINTON & CO / PATENT / STOKE UPON TRENT.
