Happy Friday! Let's end the week with a bang. Or a very loud exclamation from me. I'm so sorry if I ruined the video. But I mean gosh! That was a singe-your-eyebrows-off fireball right there! It's amazing I didn't say something worse! And how much do you love the kids' reactions in the background? This demo is known as gun cotton. DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME! If you have ever (safely!) seen something burn, it usually does so rather slowly. Cotton, wood, paper. These are all cellulose based products that burn merrily, but slowly. However, chemists can make it burn fast. Really, really, really fast. Treating cotton with nitric acid produces the following reaction: 3HNO3 + C6H10O5 --> C6H7(NO2)3O5 + 3H2O. Where the cellulose nitrate product is extremely, extremely flammable. Sulfuric acid is often used as a catalyst to speed up the nitration process. Once you have your gun cotton, it is just a simple combustion reaction. Hydrocarbon + O2 + heat --> CO2 + H2O I guess in this case we would have an additional nitrogen product since our starting material had it. What goes in, must come out - conservation of energy and matter and all. As per usual, Mike is a total trooper for taking on the scary demos that no one else wants to. Again, DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME! Elephant Toothpaste! Mike is great at the elephant toothpaste demo because he always gets it in the trashcan. Well, most of the time. But, it's better than me. I usually miss. Elephant toothpaste is a fun demo and always gets a great reaction from the kids. I mean, just listen to them! The name comes from how much foam this reaction produces - enough to brush an elephant's mouth. There are two big ideas going on in this demo. First, you mix together hydrogen peroxide with dish soap. The hydrogen peroxide, H2O2, decomposes naturally into water and oxygen gas. The oxygen gas creates bubbles in the dish soap. But, this reaction is extremely slow! And we want something fast foaming. So, we add potassium iodide to the reaction! Potassium iodide is a catalyst for the hydrogen peroxide decomposition. There are several catalyst options here, UCI outreach likes KI. Now, the decomposition happens MUCH faster! And we get an awesome explosion of foam! Enough to fill a trashcan! Potassium iodide is a disinfecting agent. If you have ever seen an iodide compound, many are yellow. KI is no different, and it kind of stains. Hence the trashcan. When performing elephant toothpaste, using a container with a small neck. This creates a bottleneck, builds up pressure, and gives you that great explosive effect. In place of KI for a catalyst, you can use yeast and hot water! Yeast is great at catalyzing hydrogen peroxide into oxygen gas. And no yellow stains! Great for at home demos!
