Insurance is a huge part of running a dental practice and it is CONFUSING for most people. My office has a policy to help minimize surprises and be as transparent as possible: - 1️⃣ We let patients know upfront whether we are IN-NETWORK with their insurance. The language here can be confusing because most people will confuse “accepting” an insurance with being an in-network provider. ☝ 2️⃣ For insurances that are notorious for declining payment, we send out major procedures for “PREAUTHORIZATION”. We do this as a courtesy for patients because if their insurance decides to decline payment, the responsibility now falls on the patient. 3️⃣ We quote the patient an ESTIMATE for their treatment PRIOR to work actually being done based on their insurance guidelines. I would say that we are pretty darn accurate most of the time. — - So what if your insurance decides not to pay and not to honor their part of coverage? Well here’s a surprise: Insurance companies DON’T WANT to pay. . Their dental “consultants” *will deem treatment as “unnecessary” as often as possible. When this happens, we go to bat for you. We send them extra documentation, photos, X-rays, fancy write ups, whatever we can to help sway their determination to “medically necessary”. Even with all this, we can STILL LOSE. I don’t think a lot of patients realize that ultimately the insurance company is calling all the shots and when they decide something, it is unfortunately out of our hands. ▶️ The WORST part is, this can often times fracture a Doc-Patient relationship and prevent the proper and timely treatment that patients need.◀️ - REAL TALK: By letting insurance companies dictate treatment and coverage, we have ALL signed up to be part of a losing battle in the long term. The trend is that insurance is covering LESS and LESS. ⬇️ Patients, I want to be upfront with you about the limitation we have as a dental practice to fight for you. Most importantly, it is important for you to understand where you stand in this dynamic. I hope this little overview helps patients realize we are both on the same team.
