Mohamad Bangura is part of the Bumbali Amputee Football Association in Makeni, Sierra Leone. Mohamad lost his leg to shrapnel when rebels from the People’s Army raided a nearby UN convoy of Zambian soldiers and procured their payload of lethal rocket propelled grenades on the township. The shrapnel shattered the bones in his lower leg. “For a moment I thought I had died, everybody thought I had died…. they put me in a casket, as that what was available for me to be carried in and flew me to a hospital in Makeni where they resuscitated me, then to Moboka in a taxi plane, then to Laka Hospital in Freetown for emergency surgery.” “At first I felt bad…. I had lost my leg. They fitted me with my first prosthesis at Handicap International, and then I went to stay in the Amputee Camp.There were SO many people there, and for the first time I didn’t feel so bad as I could see I wasn’t alone” He is a remarkable athlete, with a fiery disposition, a married man with two children and yet the broad outlook on “disability” in Sierra Leone remains that they are third-rate citizens. It’s hard to believe that as he effortlessly intercepts the ball lobbed at him for the photo shoot on a small dirt pitch the team practices on. He braces on his crutches and launches his leg into the air, catching the ball in mid-flight, uncowed and unbreakable. I’m a wheelchair user now. Not by choice. Accidents happen. I got used to the wheels, but my environment didn’t. One of the things I noticed is that as a woman in a wheelchair you don’t get cat called. I used to experience that before, when I was walking. But now it’s different. I think people see the disabled part first and then the person. It’s not that cat calling was a good thing.
