Just because someone doesn’t look disabled, doesn’t mean they aren’t. If someone says they need or can’t do something for a medical reason, they don’t owe you an explanation why. #invisibledisability — abby - - #invisibledisabilityawareness @invisibledisabilities #feminism #activism #lgbtq #disability #disabilityawareness #disabilityadvocate #disabilityrights #enablednotdisabled #iamnotmydisability #equality #humanrights #spreadkindness

In radical political circles, it’s common for those of us that are neurodivergent, crazy, and/or mad (especially women/ femmes/transfeminine folks; more layers for Black and brown women and femmes ) to be considered “too much.” It’s common for those of us with autism and other intellectual disabilities—who come from rural areas, grew up poor, are immigrants, and/or didn’t go to college—to get torn apart on social media for not saying all the right things. ACM does not think that harm is OK. What we do believe is that there are those of us who don’t have the mental capacity, cultural background, and/or education to understand all of the new ideas that are coming forth regarding oppression and privilege. When someone makes a mistake, they/we should not be kicked out of groups. This is the same logic that fuels the prison industrial complex. We are not arguing that the people harmed need to be the same people who educate someone who caused harm, *and* we often see people of the same identity (for example white folks) publicly shaming the individual. This is performative and not helpful. Radical space needs to offer more accessible ways for people of different cultures, languages, classes, and abilities to understand the complex theories and ideas that are rooted in academia (and often elitist). We invite all of us to reflect on our privileges and access to political education, to cultivate love and patience, and to become accomplices dismantling the systems of oppression our identities benefit from (most of us are a combination of privileged and marginalized identities). A true accomplice understands that offering support to someone who needs help understanding systemic oppression is more effective and transformative than writing them off. Children with disabilities in state institutions in Kazakhstan are at risk of physical violence, forced sedation, and neglect. Between October 2017 and April 2019, Human Rights Watch interviewed 27 children and young adults with disabilities who had lived in closed children’s institutions, as well as parents of children with disabilities, institution staff, and disability rights experts and activists. Human Rights Watch also visited three institutions for children with disabilities. Children and young adults who grew up in closed institutions for children with disabilities reported that staff beat them, forcibly administered sedatives to punish or control them, and forced them to take care of younger children. Anara, 30, said that in state institutions where she lived as an adult, “[If] you behave poorly, they give you shots or pills, or put you behind bars. When they punish you, they lock you up. They can keep you there until the morning. There is a metal bed, mattress. [When you’re locked up] they don’t give you food.” Kazakhstan should make it a priority to move children with disabilities out of closed residential institutions and provide support for children with disabilities to live with their families, or in other family settings in the community. An 18-year-old man who grew up in institutions said, “It’s not a life. They fed us, dressed us. I want to build my own life. I want a life! I want to live on my own, make [my own] food, go to work.” Read more at HRW.org. #humanrights #kazakhstan #disabilityrights #childrensrights (: © 2018 Human Rights Watch)

When I am less intelligent or less capable than others, it is because I am almost always not given a chance to rise to my full potential. In academics, life, and my career. I'm tired. Just say y'all hate disabled people and go. · · · [Image descriptions: 1) A screenshot of a tweet by user ellle_em that reads "Ok lemme just figure out how to make an Epi-Pen out of beeswax." 2) Two more replies by the same user that are as follows: "People like this never take a moment to consider how single use plastics are currently integral to so many forms of medical apparatus that people rely on to live. Bamboo/beeswax/glass aren't able to replace plastic in syringes, in tubing, in so many other basic medical tools. EN The Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA) gives civil rights protections to people with disabilities similar to those provided to individuals on the basis of race, color, sex, national origin, age, and religion. In recent years, increasing efforts have been made by the #Trump administration to undermine #disabilityrights, while showing disregard for other minority groups through constant attacks on #immigrants, people of color and the #LGBTQ community. Legislators must not compromise the provisions that protect the disabled and other minorities, and together with movement activists, should make continuous efforts to promote genuine and positive reforms in an effort to halt discrimination and segregation.

You wouldn't say "brown hair person," you would say "person with brown hair." It's not different when it comes to Down syndrome. Everyone is a person first. Although it seems meaningless, the words you choose to say do have an impact on people. You can change the way someone views someone else by the way you phrase what you say. You have the freedom to choose what you say- choose wisely #savedownsyndrome #advocacy #tellmewhatyoustandfor #disabilityrights #downsyndrome #specialneedsrights #morealikethandifferent #inclusionmatters #nonprofit #downrightperfect #theluckyfew #inclusion #21reasonswhy #ndss #ndsc #endlawsyndrome #spreadthewordtoendtheword #reecesrainbow #disabilityrightsinternational #imnotamememovement #organdiscriminationmovement #advocatewithnotfor
