Fences abound - we build them to keep people in, as well as to keep people out. This has always been so - it‘s in our nature. Recently we’ve built more and become less tolerant than we once were. Divisions, suspicions, prejudices and fears drive us. • I’ve had a fortunate life (so far) and visited more than 60 countries. I’ve found that people are the same everywhere. Most people are good. They love their children and want the best for their families. They are considerate, generous and honourable. They’re not different. In my heart I’ve always believed we’re the same. • John Curran once said that the only thing that is required for evil to flourish is for good (people) to do nothing. I think this is a fact. So, the reverse must also be true. If people of goodwill always act, then evil can never flourish. • This is an old photo. As simple as it looks, it is a favourite. A few years ago I bought a Leica Monochrom camera and a Noctilux lens (both manual). It was a big indulgence. I was fascinated by my new camera and experimented. • I liked the results. Every photo has a story. This photo’s story is that I was pleased with my fancy toy, and I was feeling introspective and thinking about divisions and where the world was going. I still feel that way (often). So, my message today is be a force for good! When I look at the world today, I see a commitment to creating factions. These factions make it look like we have limited options. It’s like if we disagree, you have to be my enemy No need to seek clarity or develop empathy. I mean look around us, so quick to judge each other based on exaggerated versions of our biases. And in the process of doing this, we miss out on what we are actually spreading. Viruses. Honestly though, I feel like this is a distraction from us truly seeing each other. If many of us can’t even quite articulate the threat that we feel, won’t it make sense to address the raw deal. The deal is that we are all different so we see the world differently. There’s no point being tragically myopic in a world that’s already chaotic. If we contribute to this chaos, the chasms between us become even wider. The wider they get, the less human “others” seem to us. The less human others seem to us, the easier it is to choose blinding hate. Hate that poisons us from within and strips away our intellectual humility to accept that our way isn’t the only way. We can’t become so attached to despair that we’d rather choose to become fragments of ourselves instead of engaging with an unfamiliar idea. I say this because we are weakened by our insistence on singular stories. Have the courage to examine if your belief system is based on lies. Resist the fear of being wrong and backlash by asking for honest feedback before you speak. And no, this does not make you weak. By caving in to this fear, we hurt the ones we should hold dear. I know it’s scary but rest assured you can still be brave while you’re afraid. In fact, pushing through your fear is the very essence of bravery. As factions rise, let’s commit to a different plan of action. One that seeks to work through differences and allows space for open dialogue.
