I started teaching my kids to cook when they were toddlers. Giving them age appropriate jobs every time they helped me cook. Last night Juice wanted tostones (fried green plantains) with dinner. So, I told him to go ahead and make some. I know it takes extra long to cook with toddlers and we just want to get the meal done but it’s totally worth it when you play the long game. One day you’ll wake up and have a 7 and 9 yr old that can cook by themselves. Whether it’s cooking or sewing I have found that when they are taught early on to appreciate the potential dangers of the task they are less likely to actually hurt themselves in the process. Result= self sufficient kids who are confident in their skills. As a mom I live for moments like this because it sets me a little more at ease knowing that when I’m no longer here they will have the knowledge and skill set to take care of themselves.
