. STRIP, STRIP, BOOM . . As we usher in the month of April, I find it fitting to touch on a topic of particular seasonal relevance: high water. . . Between snowmelt and abundant spring rainfall, many rivers are swollen to the banks with runoff, making for high, fast, and muddy conditions, like we see in this video by @fishnreids. It’s no secret that high water can make for boom or bust fishing, but the influx of food that is dislodged with faster flows can create a feeding bonanza too good to pass up, so it’s worth a shot. Personally, I like to employ streamers. . . In these situations, big, flashy presentations are often the most effective ways to catch trout, which tend to let their guard down in murkier conditions. What might be too big or gaudy on a crystal clear day might be an appealing morsel when visibility is decreased, and what’s more, it may be the only thing that can get their attention. . . Fishing streamers diagonally in current, like it’s done in this video, is a fantastic way to cover water and get your fly in front of a lot of fish. Experimenting with different strip cadences as you go can be the key to unlocking a plethora of action. Try a consistent pattern of strips, followed by a frantic, erratic drift. Keep experimenting, and when you find something that works, double-down on it until you’re forced to pivot. To me, that’s what makes streamer fishing so fun… but the fact that it brings out the hogs doesn’t hurt either. . . . . . . . . .

. DON’T OVERLOOK THE SMALL POCKETS . . It doesn’t take much to break up current, nor does it take a wide expanse of calm water to house a good-sized trout. One of the biggest mistakes that inexperienced anglers make when evaluating a stretch of water is failing to realize that small nooks can hold fish too, not just the obvious prime lies. . . If you think about the scale of a trout relative to the river, a small pocket of calm water like we see in this video by @burroughsaustin is all it really takes to hold a fish comfortably. If you envision a 2 foot by 2 foot box, which is a pretty small area by a human’s perspective, that’s plenty of space for the vast majority of trout, of which the majority fall under 24 inches in length. To you, a small area like that may not seem like much, but to a trout, it’s a spacious lie. The best anglers think about things from the fish’s perspective, not their own, and subsequently pick up on the finer details that many others overlook. . . Little indents in the riverbank, comparatively small rocks, and thin lanes of calm water are all smaller spots that can hold disproportionately large fish, and if we don’t stop to check them out, we risk missing out on a lot of action. Picking up on the subtleties, even if it’s just a quick drift or two as you pass, can pay off for you in a big way, so try to be extra observant of the not-so-obvious spots when you’re reading water. . . . . . .
