The next time you come by our Oakland location, check out the clear plastic trays near the register. They contain good examples of how both wet and dry processed coffees appear during the roast process...from green all the way to French.

#DRYPROCESS.
Dry process seems simple: Pick the fruit, lay it out in the sun until it turns from red to brown to near back, and then hull off off the thick, dried outer layer in one step to reveal the green bean. It is a method suited to arid regions, where the sun and heat can dry the seed inside the intact fruit skin.
It's often referred to as natural coffee, because of its simplicity, and because the fruit remains intact and undisturbed, a bit like drying grapes into raisins. Since it requires minimal investment, the dry process method is a default to create cheap commodity grade coffee in areas that have the right climate capable of drying the fruit and seed. #scai #herrysons
“The story is by now well known and too good not to be true. Apparently, Land an amateur photographer, was taking family snaps at a picnic in 1943 when his young daughter demanded to know why she couldn’t see the pictures - “now”. She had picked on the right father to confront with that question.’ —Geoffrey Crawley, ‘The British Journal of Photography’ April 1968.
“In 1947, Edwin Land demonstrated the first Polaroid process, which yielded a sepia monochrome print within 60sec. The basic principles of the diffusion
process were introduced by Edith Weyde at Agfa in the 1930s. Shortly after, the first Polaroid Land camera was launched under the slogan ”snap it, see it’. Land has founded the Polaroid Corporation in 1937. The company’s original dominant market was in polarized sunglasses, an outgrowth of Land’s self-guided research in polarization.
“Edwin Land was the first person to devise a process with incorporated processing chemistry. He invented the principle of keeping the development reagents in viscous form in a small pod at the border of the film. When the film was pulled out of the camera, the pod was squeezed between two rolls rupturing it. This allowed the reagents to spread between the surfaces of an exposed emulsion layer and an image receiving layer. The result was a practically dry process. […]
“Polacolor was a ‘peel-apart’ system that could be used in most of the Polaroid cameras of that time. The final image had to be peeled away from the film, on which the original camera image had been recorded. At room temperature the speed of the film was about ASA64. Commercial success quickly followed the introduction of the process and one year later Polaroid was the second largest photographic company in the world. […]” (Roulier) (Illus.—Andy Warhol Polacolor/Polaroids: Debbie Harry; Diana Ross; Carolina Herrera; Yoko Ono; Tina Turner; Joan Collins; Farrah Fawcett; Dolly Parton; and Liza Minnelli.
