In 1890 Alphonse Bertillon published La Photographie Judiciaire, which outlined rules for a scientifically exact form of identification photography. The guidelines developed by Bertillon also have a dark, and pseudo-medical history known as phrenology. Made famous by early psychiatrists, eugenicists and Nazis, phrenology was the belief that we could deduce the way someone was, or was going to be, through the shape of their head. Phrenologists tended to believe that criminals were born with criminality, and that proof was in the brain (or rather, the shape of the skull as caused by an over or under developed brain). Times like these are wake up calls serving as little reminders of facts of life. Speaking loudly to the importantance of anchoring ourselves firmly to the permanent love & relationship and connection we all have within our own hearts linking us up with God. Only he can sustain us, only he can be our rock. An inner strength that never falters. This solo time although challenging to be sure, was a reminder that we are born alone and we die alone. We can’t take our loved ones with us when we go. Eventually everyone we hold dearly will be torn from our side, if not during our life time with relationship breakdowns and divorce ultimately at the time of death— we are on our own. This flash back on this fact comes to me now as the last 3 days I have been in hospital in intensive care with a severe kidney infection. My husband could come and visit me but ultimately I had to do it alone. This inner connection gives me courage/ strength to go into battle, enter the darkness holding firmly to God’s hand with the Holy Names which is a bright light lighting up the halls of darkness/ sickness and suffering. I’m on the road to recovery and now at home resting.
