DONT JUST COMPRESS A SOUND BECAUSE YOU SAW SOMEONE DO IT IN A TUTORIAL!! . . Understanding your tools is so important. If you don’t know how to use the tools necessary to build a house...how would that house turn out? If you don’t understand the main tools to mix...how is your mix going to come out? . . You should only be compressing sounds that need to be compressed. If you can’t explain why a specific sound in your mix needs to be compressed, you probably shouldn’t be doing it. We see this often with kick drums. Sampled kicks specifically...the ones you get on splice or other packs. These kicks have already been heavilyyyyy processed. Why are you then going to slap another compressor on? Because someone in a tutorial said you should always compress kicks? Not a good way to mix! . . In this graphic, we go through 3 main sound groups we use as producers: samples, synths, real recorded instruments. By no means is this something to “live and die” by...however it does give you an idea of which sounds typically do need more dynamic processing. . . Always remember every sound, in every mix, is a case by case basis. Determine if the sound is too dynamic, or needs shaping...then act accordingly. These moves have purpose. Breaking The Rules... . . Before we get into this pretty badass sounding piano...let me say this: you should know the rules FIRST, before you start breaking them. . . In this processing chain you might’ve noticed I have an OTT (over the top) Compressor AFTER the reverb...what?! Why would you do that?! It’s going to blow the reverb up and mask the piano! . . Well, that’s right! And it actually sounds amazing! A lot of genres, (most notably Trance) use this extremely large, washed out piano. This processing chain will get you very close to that sound in under a minute. . . Higher octaves sound better.
