Solaris (1972)
Director: Andrei Tarkovsky
Complex, haunting, poetic, and visually resplendent, Solaris is a sci-if film that's still ahead of its times even today. A surprisingly intense yet muted film. It is an interesting examination of the worthlessness of the hierarchical masculine values of civilization. The "smartest" men are sent to Solaris yet at the station they are unable to cope with the literal materialization of their own existence, memories, or experiences when they are separated from their position in civilization and are alone with themselves. The ending of the film repeats the opening, though filtered through the confusing consciousness of an alien being that happens to be the planet Solaris. Natalya Bondarchuk is especially poignant as Hari, though Donatas Banionis is equally perfect as Kris Kelvin, though differently so. The conundrums and paradoxes that are presented in this movie cut deeper than such things usually do.

Roma (2018)
Director: Alfonso Cuarón
You may find yourself moved in the most subtle ways by the way Cuarón lingers on tragic moments or instances where embracing each other is the only thing that feels right. You might disagree with film’s politics. But Cuarón is indisputably a master of his medium. His dramatic vision, his use of the frame, and the precision of his technical execution combine for one of the most shattering and visually complex depictions of marginalisation you'll see in recent years. As a cinematographic exercise, Roma is a masterpiece - a B&W digital widescreen movie with neo-realistic (Fellini-esque) touches, employing an Alexa 65mm and a constant stream of deep focus tracking shots. The emphasis on the housekeeper Cleo as the lead role is commendable (assisted by Aparicio's brilliant performance), but Roma doesn't interrogate her servant status too far, and may condescend Cleo's stoic heroism.

Raw (2016)
Director: Julia Ducournau
Youth culture — its urges, perils, and emptiness — as a Lynchian nightmare, with a dollop of Cronenberg’s body horror. Julia Ducournau’s incisive examination of the shit society heaps at the feet of unprepared young women is more insightful than any straight coming-of-age drama in recent memory. Guided by powerful work from the young Garance Marillier and an eclectic score. Under the veil of a very unconventional topic, Ducournau deconstructs, patiently and with gusto, one of cinema's most revered virtuosities: perversion. In the vein of the best Cronenberg, there's a deeply textured layer of cinematic prowess that intrigues as much as it repulses.
