The stretch reflex is the most powerful force generator that humans have. If you are not training this, you are missing incredible amounts of power and explosiveness. . The stretch reflex is a muscle contraction that happens as a result of a quick stretch in the muscle. When a muscle quickly stretches the ‘muscle spindle’ inside the muscle sends a signal to the nerve, which sends a signal back for that muscle to contract quickly and forcefully to avoid over-stretching. (This is a simplified description). . Train this by getting your body used to absorbing energy (eccentric phase), holding the energy (isometric phase), and ultimately exploding up or forward (concentric phase) using that energy. . Squatting can be modified a thousand different ways, and as touched on in a previous post, is a movement that is often performed and taught incorrectly. . But, when you DO perform squats, it is crucial that you are performing them to the appropriate depth based on your specific GOALS with the activity. . Early on in your training program, doing deep squats can be beneficial for improving strength through the full range of motion, and can help build a strong foundation of neuromuscular control throughout the full movement of the joint. . HOWEVER, your explosiveness and power during sport is going to take place from only a limited range of motion, and it is critical that you train that specific range of movement the most, especially as it gets closer to the beginning of your season. (ex: no basketball player is going to jump out of a deep squat to dunk or grab a rebound in a game - it is inefficient and silly). . To find how deep you should go on the majority of your squats; load yourself up like you are about to jump and try to touch the ceiling, and the amount of knee bend you have at the lowest depth of your ‘loading position’ is what we at Bold Base refer to as your “critical knee angle”. The stronger and more explosive you can become within this position, the sooner you will be jumping out of the gym. . ‘Breath work’ is something I’ve mentioned to clients, and in previous posts. It’s extremely broad, and can be implemented in numerous ways for different purposes. . Intentionally changing your breath with different patterns and tempos can be great for pre- or post- workout, recovery, an energy boost at work, stress reduction, sleep, meditation/mindfulness, etc. . However, a simple place to start for stress reduction is breathing through the nose with a simple: . ➡️7 second inhale, 4 second hold, 7 second exhale. Do this for even 1-2 minutes and it is sure to decrease your stress, because it immediately turns on your parasympathetic nervous system. I also use this pattern post workout to initiate recovery, and prior to sleeping. . Breathing is one of the only voluntary things we can control that directly effects our autonomic nervous system, and can change us over to a parasympathetic state. .
