“And what do you do Mrs. Link?” . Technically, this isn’t wrong. And I don’t mind how I am addressed. I answer to Carlene, Mrs. Link, Cars (childhood nickname that stuck)—you get the picture. But I do have some thoughts to contribute to the #drnotmrs campaign started by @anukathiresanmd which I find to be extremely relevant and important. . While I am a Mrs and am married to a wonderful man, I am also a doctor of pharmacy. This degree took eight years to earn. I am proud and honored to have received it. What’s interesting is most people don’t realize the schooling and training we undergo to earn this degree, which also means people are surprised to learn we have this title. To this day, most of us dont go by doctor consistently, and when I was fresh out of residency I used to tell my medical counterparts who introduced me as “Dr.” it wasn’t necessary. I learned it is flattering to be recognized amongst my medical doctor colleagues and I deserved my seat at the table too. You will not hear me ever shying away from this introduction like I used to. . My husband is also a clinically-trained pharmacist. However, I distinctly remember a handful of incidences where we were together for a kiddo’s appointment and someone on the staff asking “Mrs. Link” if she stayed at home or where she worked since I was in jeans. We all know what happens when we make assumptions. When either I or hubby politely explained I currently work part-time as a pharmacist, it is always interesting to see their reaction. For us, it works, and it allows me to have it all, which I think anyone has the right to figure out what that means for their family. I’m proud to show my kids a woman can have a professional identity outside of the home if that is what she chooses. . I professionally go by my maiden name, and hubby never once asked me to legally change it. He understands why I kept it and how meaningful it was to me but knows I am honored to be his wife and the mother of his children. I’ll continue to answer to all of my names, but I will no longer shy away from being called doctor as I will own this title like I do all the others.❤️ - Thank you @anukathiresanmd for starting this conversation!

I’ve been asked so many times, why did I choose pharmacy, or a medicine career path. Truth be told, I simply wanted to help others. . Committing to a career in medicine shifts your personal pendulum for a long time, no matter what field you choose. The hours of studying, interning, shadowing, and exam taking can be tolling. Then for us who go on to residency, the additional training is incredible but can also be extremely draining. Throw in a board certification and then fully immersing yourself into your field so we can fully and adequately provide the best patient care as we know how and are able. But, you can guess something(s) have to give. . For the longest time, I allowed the pendulum to remain completely out of balance. At times I felt I had tables a lot of what I enjoyed doing, what truly filled me up ,to make sure I was as competent as I could be in my career. I was, for all intensive purposes, lost. . What if it didn’t have to be this way? What it we promised to not only commit to becoming a strong practitioner but promised to do what we need for ourselves? In my experience, I’m a much better mom, wife, pharmacist, business owner, friend (etc) when I am fulfilled, because I can put my best foot forward. What if we didn’t have to lose those parts of ourselves along the way and we chose to reconcile who we are as humans? Guess what, we don’t have to. And you can refocus that pendulum starting NOW. Because you deserve to be who you are in all areas of life. . Today I’m so grateful for @drreneeparo for starting the #reconcilingmedicine campaign and inviting me to share my voice. Let’s get back to who we are so we can be our best for everyone in our lives. - - - - - #daretodreambigdarlings #changeagent #thereallife #goformore #intentionallife #passionandpurpose #womenwithambition #hustleharder #mindsetmatters #trainyourbrain #discoverunder10k #reconcilingmedicine

7 years of awesome Happy Anniversary @dr.alan.n. Not only is he my beef cake but his is sexy too I often get questions about how we manage a long distance relationship. The answer to that question is the same as maintaining anything else you wanna keep, it won’t be easy and you both have to WORK FOR IT. We both make an effort to communicate with one another, update each other about our days, and make compromises to work around his residency schedule and my work schedule. Most important: we support each other’s endeavors knowing that ultimately, we share the same goal at the end

Beauty & the Bleed Reversal Wrapped up 4 continuing education sessions for my staff pharmacists this week about some cool, new (& expensive ) drugs and when their use is indicated. The beauty of new drugs, new controversial literature! (Side note: how do you think the admin would feel if I made this into a poster and placed it throughout the hospital? Just advocating for my profession, no?) : Shout out to google’s own @realscalgione for recording my prezi from across the country for mass distribution : @paschallsamuel #emergencymedicine #legaldruglord #clinicalpharmacist #doctorofpharmacy #edpharmacist #prothrombincomplexconcentrate #andexanetalfa #idarucizumab #iwishtheypaidmeasmuchastheypayfordrugs #atleastjackieiseasytosay
